losing oil pressure

well i have my mustang and i am having an issue. during the cold start up my oil pressure shoots to 40psi.(i did just install some new aftermarket gauges so its correct)once the car gets warm it goes down to 20, then when its at operating temp at an idle its either at 5 or 0! if i rev it up it will go up about 10psi every 1000rpm and tops out at 40-50psi. any one have any idea why this thing is acting this way? when i'm cruising its around 20. is there something with those fox body's with the double sump and pick up maybe? any ideas or common problems? BTW, when it does drop to 0psi at idle it never knocks or anything. some times i hear what sounds to be a scraping noise. but it hasn't done that for a while.

i did change the oil twice. once was 10w30 then i tried 20w50. the 20-50 seems to keep the scraping noise from happening. it doesn't burn or use any oil either.

it could be the oil pump malfunctioning, or the oil pressure sensor...

how was the oil pressure with the 10-30? are you sure there is enough oil in it? 5 quarts with a stock pan.

the thinner oil didn't make a difference really. ya, i have checked it a few times. 5 quarts w/filter and i've changed it twice.

ya, i changed the factory sending unit, then i put in an aftermarket mechanical gauge too with the same results.

i'm also having a problem with it starting to over heat a little 200-215, with a 190 stat! i think it has the small 2 row radiator.

I'm by far no expert in anything with cars, but I did have a similar problem recently with my 87 2.3L EFI engine. We rebuilt it and got it in the car. After 2-3 weeks of having it in I had the same problem. What the problem was is I had spun a bearing on the 3rd piston in the engine. May want to check into it.

that sucks. don't i have to pull the engine to drop the pan? since its a double sump? thats what every one is telling me! but i have no experience with the fox body! is there a way i can drop the pan with out pulling the lotor all the way out??
