i have an 84 stang 5.0. i bought it about two weeks ago bone stock. its kind of temper mental but all things electrical would flash when the car was started. then it would only happen when i turned my headlights on. well now i had best buy put an aftermarket stereo in it and when the car is running everything flashes really bad. whats weird..everything works great when i turn the key to acc. as soon as i start it, it flashes again. i dont even know where to look any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks in advance.

Is there an alarm under the dash? Maybe there is one in there and someone just cut out the speaker.

I have only seen one car do something like that it was from water getting into the BCM from a leaking windsheild. But the car was a 97 which is quite a bit different than a 84.

Not that I have any ideas, but when you say all electrical, are you talking about the dash, or other stuff too?

Check your power connections, grounds. Have the battery and alternator tested.

dash, radio, headlights, taillights, interior lights - i will have auto zone test them today. but you would think that it would still flash when the ing. is on acc.

The voltage regulator in the alternator could be bad, the ground from the block to the battery could be bad, the power connections could be loose enough to the point where the engine idling is making them rattle.

I'm not saying this is exactly whats going on but its a good place to start looking.

I can tell you that all that stuff is connected in some way to the instrument cluster wiring, and that in acc you don't send any power to the instrument panel, only when the ignition is in the on position. Good luck with it. Hope they can trace your problem.

He makes a good point... does this do it in the ign. position with the car off?

please tell me you mean't to say "wasn't charging too good at idle"... cause if not, that guy at autozone just pulled a fast one on you.

also if thats the case, with the problem happening with the ign. on and the car not running, then you have a possible short in something thats tied into the ign only. You will have to isolate the circuit. the simplest thing to start with is turn the ign on and pull one fuse at a time from your fuse box. if you pull a fuse and it stops, you have found the circuit and now you have to narrow it down inside that circuit... this may not work but its an easy start.

Its on the bottom side of the column..... its what the key rod moves to start the car. More than likely it has already been replaced for the recall but they still burn up from loose connections in the pigtail. Its best to replace them both at the same time. If the wires aren't burnt up I would just pull the wires out of the pigtail and move them into the new one.
