cant figure it out

ok so i just put a new 302 in my mustang. wired the ignition and the alternator then wired the electric fuel pump. when all was done i finally grounded the battery. now for some reason when i start the car it doesnt fully turn over it cranks but doesnt go. then when i pull the key out it keeps cranking so i had to unbolt the ground in order for it to shut off. everytime i ground the battery the car cranks over but doesnt fully start. i was trying to diagnos the problem for it not fully cranking over when this actually occured. i thought it was the carb not fully installed right. so i basically have two problems it doesnt fully turn over it just cranks and it keeps cranking until i unground it. any help please

Does it start cranking when you hook the ground up with the key off or only when you turn the key on? Electrical problems suck!

Solenoid is bad and has failed in the on position or your ignition switch has failed in the on position. You can check by removing the small wire from the top of the solenoid. If it still keeps on cranking, you need a new solenoid ($7 at autozone) if it stops when you pull the small wire off the solenoid, you have a failed ignition switch (don't know how much these cost)...

After you fix that problem...Check for spark at the plugs and fuel pressure. If you have both spark and fuel pressure, the reason it will not start is most likely timing. Try dropping the distributor at TDC and then advancing just a touch. This will usually get it running long enough to set the timing properly with a timing light.

when i checked for spark at the coil i got nothing while trying to crank it over..fuel is going into the carb so im doubting the possibility its a fuel problem unless i set the carb up wrong..idk..but yeahh no spark going to the coil

Well, then you have an ignition problem. Could be your ignition switch is bad and is causing both problems...

You have no spark to the coil, but you have continuous fire to the starter? Hmmm, sounds like the ignition switch is wired wrong.
