Front left tire knocking...

Been happening awhile now on my 91 GT. The front-left tire has a knocking noise ONLY when turning right, whether I'm moving forward or backward, and regardless of speed. It does not click/pop/knock when the car is sitting, only when moving, and of course the noise gets faster the faster I'm going.

I changed the wheel bearings and did a good job of it, but it didn't solve anything.

My first thought after wheel bearings was the balljoint. The only reason I'm even asking for help instead of replacing it is that I've read that if the balljoint is bad, you'll get the knocking or popping even while the car is sitting still. Mine doesn't, even after a healthy warm-up.

Anyone have any other theories or have ran into this problem before?

I ran into that problem with a different car, a POS Intrepid, it turned out to be the tie rod. Have someone turn the wheel back and forth while you look at all the ball joints and the bushings where the rods connect to the rack. Thats the end that was popping on my wifes car.

No problem. She actually had to back up and turn the wheel for me to see it pop. Good luck.

Yeah, I would say tie rod end, ball joint, A-arm bushing, or shock mount. Could also be the steering rack bushings, those tend to get flanged out like the village prostitute after awhile.

After much trouble changing the ball joints out and putting new wheel bearings in, making sure the tie rod ends were in good condition, and after a thorough inspection of everything hub related on both sides of the car, it's still knocking. It reminds of when I used to pin a playing card to my bike frame to get that obnoxious ticking noise.

I guess I'm looking at replacing the steering gear box, huh?

Any idea on someplace cheaper than Flaming River for this part?

Also, should I go ahead and replace the Power Sterring Pump as well, or just stick with the stock one?
