Question for darrell about engines

Do a 347 right away. That extra 16 cubic inches is worth it. Don't buy into that rod to stroke ratio bullshit. There is absolutely no truth behind it. A 347 is not any weaker than a 331 or anything else. They don't have oil burning issues either which is another myth. A big block Chevy has a 1.533 rod to stroke ratio and a 347 has a 1.588. Does that mean a big block Chevy is less reliable than a 347? A Chevy 400 has a 1.484 rod to stroke ratio.

Buy an Eagle cast steel 3.4 stroke crank, Eagle 5.4 I beam rods, forged pistons if the engine will see nitrous or a blower otherwise use hypereutectic pistons if the engine will be naturally aspirated, TFS R series or CNC ported 185cc Twisted Wedge heads and the proper EFI or Carbureted intake. Pick out a good cam that will match the combination and will also depend on what he wants out of that engine. It doesn't take much to make 500 horsepower with a 347 and it will be plenty reliable. I've built many of them.
Hey darrell, you posted this a while ago. Any chance you could give me a parts list to make right around 500hp? That's be awesome. You know, you've built many of them...

- Eagle 3.4 stroke cast steel crank part #103023400
- Eagle 5.4 I beam rods part #5400CB
- Forged pistons - any good brand and pick your compression (10:1 or higher)
- spend the money and get a custom cam. Cam Motion is a good company.
- TFS CNC ported 205cc twisted wedge heads part #51400004-CO2
- For a carbureted engine use a Victor intake, for EFI use a Victor EFI or Trick Flow R series intake.

I've gone 11.0s with an EFI 347 very similar to what I've listed above in a 3300lb car with a nitrous converter. I've gone 10.8s with a carbureted 347 similar to the one listed above in a 3100lb car with a nitrous converter. A couple friends of mine are running very similar ETs with full weight fox body GTs (3300 + pounds).

Thanks for the reply. I'll probably be asking a few more questions pretty soon.

Okay, you say 347. I have the stock motor, so I guess that's a 302. I would assume I have to buy a 347?

302 block bored .030 and a 3.4 stroke crank makes a 347.

So I wonder what that setup would do in my 2300 pound mustang 2 HMMM

2300lbs????? What did you do to it to get it that light? I had a 74 and a 77 and they were just over 3000 pounds.

So a 306 with a 3.4 stroke crank would make a 347?

Darrell,

I wanna thank you for your good comments, that 11 sec number really opened my eyes.

I already got my Eagle 347 kit, and the cheapest place to buy from is CNC Motorsports where John Pickett & Clint Anderson can sell it to you for $732 shipped anywhere in the States (it's how much I got it for) and that includes Keith Black KB246 hypereutectic flat pistons 6.5cc:

http://www.cnc-motorsports.com/produ...024&CtgID=9051

Got my block bored .060 over (max limit) so it should make 352 cid, and with a TFS cam of either:

Trick Flow Specialities 51402000
Advertised Durations: In / Ex = 275 / 279
Durations @ .050 Lift In / Ex = 221 / 225
Valve Lift In / Ex = .499 / .510
LSA = 112
$159 at Summit Racing

or

Trick Flow Specialities 51402001
Advertised Durations: In / Ex = 286 / 294
Durations @ .050 Lift In / Ex = 224 / 232
Valve Lift In / Ex = .542 / .563
LSA = 112
$164 at Summit Racing

along with my World Products Windsor Sr. heads (2.02/1.60) 64cc, 1.6 Scorpion roller rockers, Edelbrock Performer 5.0 intake manifold with heat spacer, 70mm BBK TB, 30# inejctors, 1 5/8" headers & 2.5" collector... I HOPE the motor is going to make an easy 410 HP or more (my calculated compression ratio for this build up is 10:1)

This is my plan, my own recipe', but I don't have the results yet.
