DRFDIGGER's Back! STD VS AUTO Question

OK I dont know if yall remember me, but I was torn between a coupe with no floor and a Hatch with more rust than the titanic....lol

I chose the coupe, and just got through welding in the floorpan in the drivers side (see pics)

I have all the interior except the console and ft seats put in, but I ran into a big problem...

I assumed (yes I know what it does) that the floor was the same for an AUTO as it was for a STD.....

But when going to put the Auto Shifter in, I found the bolt holes were different, and when I try to put the base of the console on....the shifter is about 1 1/2 inches to tall....

I will let the pics tell the rest of the story, but I need help here...

AM I GOING TO HAVE TO WELD IN A NEW FLOOR FOR THE AUTO SHIFTER OR IS IT THE CONSOLE THAT IS DIFFERENT???

Thanks in advance Yall

Floor pan looks good man. Sure wish I could help you out with that shifter problem, but like you I thought they were the same, and interchangeable from auto to stick. Looks like you'll have it running in no time. Good luck.

Are you sure that transmission is mounted properly? It looks like it's sitting very high - like the top of the trans is mounted flush against the bottom of the floor pan.

I dont even have the tranny in the car. On autos the shifter mounts to the floor and a cable goes down to the tranny.

Thanks neverfastenough!

OK, first of all, it is hard to put the center console on even with a manual and the top of the shifter taken off. Make sure your shifter is as far back as it can go and force the console down diagonally from the top. If that doesn't work, here is an idea. Unbolt the shifter. Put it inside the center console. Get the whole thing roughly in place and then bolt the shifter down working under the console (yeah, it will not be real easy). It looks to me like your shifter is in about the right place. Also was the car originally a manual? Because the center console is a little different from manual to automatics.

BUT!!!! before you do any of that, I would put carpeting in or you'll be doing the whole thing all over again. The carpeting goes under the console.

First of all, Thanks

OK I did force it down on it, and when I tried to but the bezel on it would not go in. everything fit except the shifter was about 1/2 inch too tall...

I hear you on the carpet, I just want to make sure it all fits before I lay it....for instances just like this.

The car was originally a 87 4CYL Manual, but the console and shifter is from the '88 Automatic GT donor car.

It is entirelky possible that I got the 2 console shells mixed up...

What are the differences? Are they noticeable by just looking at them? I am far more willing to go find another console shell than I am to "customize" the way the shifter mounts....

Yeah, I think you'll have to modify a manual console to fit around the shifter. you should be able to tell the difference between the consoles by looking at them. I think the shifter is supposed to come through the console, not sit under it, but I honestly don't know that much about putting auto's in mustangs. You may have to modify (i.e. cut away some of the plastic) the console to get it to fit over the shifter. It will not look exactly great, but it should fit.

that's my best guess.

Yeah Im not too keen on Autos either, but its for 2 reasons:

1. I have an auto and would have to buy a std $$$

2. My knees are shot from the Army, so bad they put me out on disability, so driving a stick isnt too fun for me, even though Id take a stick over an auto any day.

Ill keep this thread up to date and let yall know whats up, in case anyone runs into this again.

Thanks!

Yeah, my knees are fine, but holding the clutch down in my mustang at a long light still isnt fun, I can only imagine what it would be like with bad knees. Anyway, good luck with the install, hopefully it will go smoother.

OK I think I got it figured out.

I can trim up the Bezel to make it fit... (thanks ryans88gt) the shifter will "stick up" out of the console alittle more than usual, but it will look OK... Ill try to get pics up tonight when i get back to work on it...
