You mean better then plain old cork?
I have a set of Mr. Gasket Ultra-Seals (part number MRG-5870) and they seem to be holding good.
Only $12. They are rubber and cork with a steel core.

the ford valve cover gaskets work the best with aluminum VCs they are rubber and metal and are reuseable.

Try to find he rubber kind like the others have said, I try to use them for everything. I really like the reusable ones for the diff covers as well, who like to scrape gasket sealant.

When I asked about "plain cork", I was asking about nothing but cork, as in no metal support and not cork impregnated with rubber or some other substance. Anything is better then plain cork although I've had plain rubber that did not do so well either.
