Spark plug wires - what do you use?
Just wanted to get some feedback from you guys about spark plug wires. I'm putting GT40Ps in right now and I think my wires will hold out for a while, but I noticed (as I took my engine apart) that one of the wires has already scorched through the insulation as it laid on a header.
So I'm trying to find some 90* boot options in a Jegs or Summit catalogue but they are few and far between. And sometimes quite expensive. I was thinking about ordering a universal / cut to fit thing and doing it myself. Has anyone ever done this, and if so, what all tools do you need? I know at least one kit said it included a stripper - should you need a particular crimper? What is HEI and what type socket do we need for the spark plugs? Or does someone have a kit they are using with 90* spark plug boots? Any good recommendations? I think the consensus around here is the Ford Racing wires are crap, but other than that I don't know what's up. Thanks in advance. |

I've heard great things about Taylor wires from Darrel so I went with these:
http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku Assembly on the first one is really a pain in the butt, I found some tricks after that one. 1. Connect to dist, determine length 2. Use razor blade to cut off, add the length you will strip to overall (ie add an inch) 3. Carefully cut off the insulation (silicon part) by rolling the blade around the wire one inch back 4. LOTS of lube on the outside end of the wire, lots of lube inside the boot back (keep the lube off your hands) 5. Push the wire into the boot while spinning 6. Fold back electrode and put on crimp connector 7. Use larger part of slip jaw pliers to "roll" crimp the connector on (making sure it is rotated how you want the boot on 8. Grap the connector where the plug will go in with needle nose pliers and pull the boot over 9. Install. I found the 135 degree boots get the wires away from my shorties and on top the valve covers, no marks after 4 months, but I keep them off the headers with the cheap wire looms. |

Anyways, I think I have some JBA shorties from a previous owner, according to the product number. The clearance looks fine, but like I said, one of the wires was scorched through even before I put the GT40Ps on there. I think I should replace the wires anyway and I was looking for some 90* sets. Thanks for the feedback so far guys. |
