400 is a good number but its going to take some good amount of cash and time. i would say stroke it out to 347 get a nice top end set. cam, heads, intake, and i would say go carbed, maybe a nice demon 4bbl or edelbrock. good set of headers nice exhaust system youll def be there even beyond it...then you need to worry about suspension tranny so its going to be a long path..you can easily stay with a stock bottom end and upgrade the top end..edelbrock has some nice kits for the top end that run around 1500..nice suspension nice exhuast.. and short shifter a few minor upgrades and some nice wheels..youll have some nice times at the track and it will still be a good cruising car. im guessing your not looking for a monster track killer..lol..just a nice street car..if thats the case just upgrade the top end, tune it fully, make sure compression is nice..youl have fun..just shop around and dont settle for the cheaper way out youll jsut end up having to start over again and spending more money..just shop at jegs.com summitracing.com they always have nice deals there..good luck and welcome to mm

400hp is easy, pullies, exhaust a good cam, and a good fuel pump, then spray 200hp at it and piss off the guys with semi-built engines.

i know this might piss off some of the traditional style guys, but i was thinking about spending a big chunk of cash on a bulletproof bottom end, and then going with a small turbo setup, so i can reach my goal in a reasonable amount of time, but when i do have the money, i can go monster style without yanking blocks and starting over. make sense?

Here's what i was looking at starting with:
AD Performance Dominator 331 Shortblock
$4,495.00
AD Performance Custom Race Engine

DART Sportsman Billet Cap Race Block

3.25 Forged Crankshaft (Scat, Eagle)

5.400 H-beam connecting rods (Scat, Eagle)

Probe Forged 2618 pistons, Flat top or Dished (Optional: JE, SRP, Ross, CP, Customs.)

Clevite Race Bearings

Moly File fit Rings, please specify boost level or application

Balanced within 1 g, bored 4.030, torque plate honed, align honed, full block prep work

Blueprinted

Assembled

Heads, camshafts, oilpans and other options available.

We do NOT shortcut our engines! Every engine is custom made for your specific application and is FULLY machined and professionally assembled one at a time.

In basic form these engines will support in excess of 800+hp. With several small upgrades these combo's will support 1200hp! We can fully customize this engine to your brand and application specifics, this is an example of our common build, please inquire for specifics.

AFR heads,
Holeset turbo.

If you want to turbo it why build the motor? You can make a pretty much stock 302 with a turbo make 400 hp no problem. In fact they are a great platform for boost because of the 9:1 CR and if its a pre 93 motor the forged pistons. Really the only time you need to build the motor is if your going above 500 hp really and thats because of the block mainly. The block is by far the weakest part of a 302.

Do a nice heads/Cam/Intake setup and a small 5 or 6 psi turbo kit and you will see 400 hp easily. You probably could do a stock heads/cam/intake and run like 12 - 14 psi and make 400 pretty easily too. Will just take more boost to do it with the stock top end. Good Luck

www.quicktimeturbosystems.com

His base kit, about $2900, has enough power to split your block in half if unleashed!

What would he use the two engine halves for? Doorstops?

EDIT: Ooo! Wheel chocks, that'd be ironic!

That would make a perfect wheel chock,I dont think anything could roll over half of a 302 block .
