All T5 transmissions do that, actually all manual transmissions do that because reverse is engaged without a synchro.

I guess if yours has never done that or has got noticeably worse above and beyond what is normal there must be something else going on. Some transmissions use various methods to stop the input shaft but I don't think the T5 has something like that, I could be wrong. You can put the trans in a forward gear first, you should hear a small clunk as the input shaft stops or partially release the clutch in a forward gear get it to stop, then go immediately to reverse.

If anything, I'd say your input shaft is still spinning with the clutch fully pushed in which may caused by a misadjusted clutch causing the input shaft to keep moving or your reverse idler or reverse gears are bad and not aligned or mating right.

Maybe someone that knows more about the T5 will speak up but I'd think you could narrow it down a little more by putting it in reverse once, back to N or a forward gear (without letting out the clutch) and then trying again to see if it was hard the second time. For the second time, the input sharf should definatley not be moving and it should not grind.

I've come to the conclusion after writing all of this that I have no idea and I've said a lot of nothing but damnit, I'm posting it anyway.

I just shift into 5th then put it into reverse, no problem. Stops the gears from spinning. Could never eliminate it with any amount of clutch adjustment. Just something the T5 likes to do.

No hold the clutch in and put it in 4th then reverse thats the trick mine did the same thing and it wont grind. Most almost all t-5s do that.
