Building a 89 GT in High School

Well, since this is my first post i guess i should somewhat introduce myself. i'm a 16 year old kid and i'm going into my Junior year in highschool and right now i drive a 93 explorer, and I work at the local Chevrolet dealership cleaning and detailing the used trade ins. Aside from all that, my brother's neighbor has a '89 mustang GT with an AOD automatic and he is selling for $500 bucks. Body is straight, tranmission is good, but the motor has a broken oil ring on the 5th cylinder so it is a mosquito killer for sure. But i figure for 500 bucks, it is a great platform for what i want. I don't want it mild, but i don't want it wild either. I'm thinking if I just have it bored to a 306 with some Forged flat-tops and keep EVERYTHING else stock right now in the powertrain compartment that it'd be best so I could restore the interior and put some tough suspension under it, and then get it repainted all pretty and slap some Chrome 17" 4 lug cobra's on it. and then just drive it until I have enough saved up to really have that 306 screaming (6 psi supercharger, all GT-40 aluminum heads, intake, and on and on) wow.. feels like i've written a book, but I'm just really excited because all this is coming from my hard work, I'm not letting my dad help because this is MY car, and 10 years from now after i've built the car and had it awhile, i wanna be able to say that i built this when i was 16-17 years old Any questions or comments are welcome

First, welcome to MM

Second, wow for $500 it sounds like you're getting an absolute steal. You've obvously thought out a solid plan, and I dig the 17" Cobra R's (my favorite fox wheel). I would suggest though, if you're planning on boost down the road you should consider dished pistons so you could support more boost, and go ahead and do forged rods as well.

Yeah, i've thought about dished pistons, but since i don't really want to run anymore than 6 psi, i figured if i keep the compression around 9:1 w/out the SC that it'd be fine with it. or am i wrong?

Sounds like a great project. Snatch that Fox up and get to work on it. Keep us updated on your progress. Good luck. It will one of the most trying and rewarding things you have done.

9:1 would be perfect for either boost or n/a. I guess it depends on the type of piston, and the flat / dished doesn't matter so much as the compression ratio.

Yeah, the heads i'm going to be using are 64cc's and with the type of flat top i'm getting it's gonna put the compression at either high 8:1 or right at 9:1 compression. I'm really excited i'm getting paid friday afternoon so friday night i'll have 500 bucks and a few hundred in change, so pistons and rods will be coming soon, then the motor and transmission is coming out and the magic will start happenin

Good luck on the project! Most people can't even think about a roller for $500. So you are getting one helluva deal. @16 yrs old you don't have to worry about bills and most of the other things that hamper a project budget at a later age. Build now is the thing to do. I just wish I would have done the same when I was 16. But then again fox bodies were $10,000 to $15,000 when I was your age.

Sounds like a great project. I am 17 and have a modded 6cyl- I wish I knew as much about cars and modding as you when I was on the market for my first car. Good luck, and you should find the answer to any 5.0 question within the forum here

Well, my oldest brother is 25 and has ALWAYS been into cars, so that is why I know what I do about engines. I helped him build his '72 Maverick street car with a carbed 302 and a c4. But I'm really excited about this car... especially since i'm gonna have it owning my bro's maverick

News Update:

Well, there's bad news, and then there's bad news, and possibly good news

first off my mom lost her job recently because she did home health for a little girl who was quadreplegic, and the little girl (age 12) lost her life, her body just could not fight the illness any longer. And now my mom is jobless and very depressed as she had taken care of her since age 6 and actually thought of her as a daughter she had never had. Now aside from the depressing part, my mom has a 2005 Dodge Ram hemi (standard cab, short bed, 20's etc.) and now that she doesn't have a job and is really in no condition to look for one right now, she cannot make her $520 a month payment, and as much as i'd like to build this mustang and have my own car i built... I just cannot bear to see my mom loose her truck after just loosing her best friend. So the $500 i had been saving is going to make her payment, and I will more than likely take over payments on the truck because she is moving back to Wisconsin to 'start over' and live with my aunt and uncle. Now i am not a Mopar person, my blood runs Ford blue, but i think after i've paid the truck down i can resell it and hopefully start building this god danged car! or if i do end up liking the truck.. keep it and make it a monsterour beast.

well, i've noticed i write way to long of posts, but i cannot believe this pressure all of a sudden and gotta vent in some way, so unfortunatly for those who read this... your my vent! haha, so if ya'll have any advice or anything about what i should do, tell me. Being 16 years old this is shitty.

i know its a bad bitch, but i just don't know if i can handle paying for the truck... 21,000 just seems like to much for me.. I only make around 180 bucks a week... so i won't have no extra cash after gas and truck payment. But my mom might have found a small job babysitting to get the money to make her payment before she leaves.. so i hope that happens

To Much money

I know I would not want to be strapped with a $500 truck payment at 41 much less at your age. Let the truck go....................

I had to sell a 2004 Motorcycle that I loved a few months ago. Yes, I really miss it, but being broke sucks ass, no one should live week to week just to have a toy. trust me on this one
