Overheating

Brand new radiator, waterpump, hoses, thermostat, electric fan, and an autometer temp gauge. it keeps building heat when i drive it. if you take the radiator cap off the temp will fall down but when you put it on the heat starts building again. and i have put on 2 different radiator caps.

16lb cap is good. Each psi raises the boiling point by 3degrees so instead of boiling at 212F it would be 260F w/ a 16lb cap

you replaced your lower radiator hose? make sure it has the spring in it still and isnt collapsing by getting to operating temp, rev it and see if it collapses or sucks itself together. it wont collapse with the cap loose or off because if cant develope pressure . if the hose IS collapsing, then its not getting any coolant when it does

Run the engine with the radiator cap off and look for air bubbles in the coolant coming up to the cap.

If you have air bubbles coming up that most likely indicates a broken head gasket or cracked head that is allowing combustion pressure to escape into the cooling system, thus pressurizing it further and causing overheating as you describe. Also you might notice coolant in your oil or other containments in your coolant which would also be a red flag.

generally though you'll push coolant out the overflow (more than it can hold) cuz the compression must displace something if its in there, which is the coolant

he never said it was boiling over into the overflow...he said it was building heat. a bad sensor can tell you its overheating when its not. Dont get me wrong here...were all going by the info he posted which said nothing about overflowing. if thats the case, then yes...look into compression.
Snap-on sells a fairly inexpensive coolant sniffer/tester that utilizes 2 stages of dyed water...the dye changes colors when there is combustion present(yellow is gasoline-green if diesel). i suggest this method if combustion IS what you suspect. an infrared digital thermometer is a great way to ensure the car is actually overheating.

ok...what all have YOU done to yours? just having a bad lip on the radiator cap seat can duplicate a bad cap.

I need to jump in on this cause I am having a similar problem w/ overheating in my 97 V6 car w/ a 95 5.0 engine (I didn't do the swap so I don't know the particulars). I haven't changed anything but I did just buy the car. Maybe I did this wrong but I started my car and took the radiator cap off, within about 15 seconds the coolant started to overflow. I figured maybe it was an air pocket or something so I let it keep running and it continued to bubble up and occasionally out. After reading what you said about the cap I had this question and I'm pretty sure the 2 are related. I also have a 16lb cap but when my temp gets up to the 215 deg line (I have a regular temp guage) I can hear the coolant boiling inside. According to what you said that's something wrong. I checked my hoses and their good and I can't really tell if the oil and cool. are mixed. I know this is a long message but if you need more info let me know. I appreciate you help w/ this too.

I'm having trouble w/ my drive belt also. Just replaced the tensioner cause it was wore slap out, you could deflect the belt about 4" by hand, now, even w/ the new one it still bounces like cazy, could that affect the water pump? also what could cause that? a warped pulley maybe?

either your cap isnt sealing correctly, or that belt is too loose and the belt is slipping on the water pump pulley. a new belt should barely fit with the tension all the way up. i tried 3 belts before i found the right one...the others were too loose and and slipping cause the tensioner was all the way down

not to say you couldnt have other issues since you have not done other cooling systm repairs, like a partially clogged radiator

i just pulled the heads took them to the shop and got them checked. installed them with new gasgets and the car still buids heat. i was driving on the highway after installing the heads and my temp gauge got to 226 and kept on going up really slow.

you need to buy you a temp gun, and ck your temp at you manifold or outlet to the radiator and verify your gauge readings first. once youve done that and are honestly overheating, then look to other causes. thorough troubleshooting will lead to less finances being burned for no reason
