just bought 86 stang...need some mod help please~!
ok heres the deal, i bought a bone stock 86 mustang today... gt 5spd...realistically i have upwards of 5k to throw into it...im looking for power, i.anyways im concerned about the engine, i wanna do heads, cam, upper and lower intake, rockers rods throttle body exhaust etc..basically looking for an all around good setup without touching the main block or crank...i dont want to end up buying parts that dont match up right...if someone could give me a setup they think would provide the most power....id appreciate it. ive looked and see to get 3.73 gears and cai h/c/i but i wanna know specifics so i know im building the right setup.

if you bought it from a seller you dont know, i would most likely rebuild it then work from there. so before the rebuild when its all taken apart you can get some fresh machine work done to the block and heads, unless you want to go after market with the heads.. that should only run you $600 or close to that. jegs has some nice gasket rebuild kits, then you should look into pistons of the size that you bore it out to i.e. .030, .040, .060. after that get the heads ported. before you get machine work def shop around and visit the machine shop to see how they do their work. after that you can go with a crane cam of your choice and some 1.7 rr from crane. if you do go aftermarket with heads you can shop around for some heads in jegs. ive heard good things about twisted wedge never used them though. you can go with a edelbrock intake manifold, possibly the victor jr series. when buying though do a little research about each product. dont jsut look for which one adds the most hp, matching products up correctly is a nother big factor. a good tuned car is a good running car ya know. best bet is not to rush into anything, dont go the cheap route cause youll jsut wind up having to do more to the engine and wishing you shoped around and went the best route. sorry to be brief with specific parts and all but i think you should shop around and do some research since its your car and all.

![]() I guess doing the work twice would suck but I would say if it does not burn oil and a compression test is good, I would not assume the bottom end needs to be rebuilt unless you want to. You will be replacing the gaskets when you put the new heads on anyway. A little more involved but you can pay about $20 and have an an oil sample analyzed and diagnosed. The diagnosis is more accurate if you know how many miles that current oil has and what brand it is but either way, you will have a lot of useful information about the overall condition of the engine.

I will tell you this most people do not know in 86 they used 10:1 compression to do this they used flat topped pistions If you put a diffrent cam in a stock block it will be very bad. Now I do not know what cam heads you can get buy with comp cams might be able to help you out. I ended up calling them to buy a cam and they informed me of this 86 is the only year for this.I put gt40 ported and polished heads on mine and i am curently looking for gt40 uper and lower intake. for now

http://www.blackstone-labs.com/ is what a lot of users on "Bob is the oil guy" forum use for testing. Have not done it myself yet though.

thats pretty sweet actually..but anyways..no i didnt know about that whole 86 compression deal..so you might as well rebuild it and do your own thing to the block.

thank you for all your help...i was looking into the twisted wedge top end kit heres the specs:
Trick Flow Top-End engine kits provide dyno-proven power without the guesswork. Built around Trick Flow?s Twisted Wedge cylinder heads (TFS-51400004), the kits include a specially matched hydraulic roller cam (TFS-51402000), roller rockers (TFS-51400510), gasket kit (TFS-51400904), timing chain, pushrods (TFS-21406700), and short valve covers. Lifters not included. TFS-K514-350-370, 350hp/370ft.-lbs., kit Kit Contents: TFS-51402000 Hydraulic roller camshaft, each TFS-51400510 Roller rocker arms, set of 16 TFS-21406700 Chromemoly pushrods, set of 16 TFS-51400904 Gasket kit, each TFS-51400801 Silver valve covers, pair TFS-51400004 Twisted Wedge aluminum cylinder heads, pair TFS-51500001 EFI intake manifold, silver upper, kit ARP-154-3601 Head bolts, kit TFS-51400800 Oil fill kit TFS-51478520 Billet timing chain, set FEL-TCS45449 Timing cover, set NOTE: Kits were dyno-tested on a 306 cubic inch engine with 9.5:1 compression, a 70mm throttle body, 24lb injectors, 190 lph fuel pump, mass air, and 10° base timing. now im assuming the kit doesnt come with the injectors throttle body etc...but another concern thath i have is the exhaust, i want to to bbk longtubes but will they match with the outlets on the heads? if so this seems like a great deal...and would i need to change anything else in the process or will that work out ok? and obviously gears but im going with 3.73's because i wanna save a little gas! |

custom cam twisted wedge heads trick flow upper and lower holley 75mm TB and EGR 24lb injectors Headers harland sharp, crane, ford racing, 1.6's or 1.7's and 100-150 shot of NOS.. you could still do the 3:73s and suspension crap..

stupid to just do engine crap..trust me, some basic mods to the motor will make that thing haul ass anyways...do some suspension stuff, new rear gears, clutch, shifter and stuff like that..make it easier to drive and handle..and you can still do some engine mods
MAC or BBK Cold Air 65mm TB and EGR Trick Flow Upper and Lower Intake BBK headers H or X pipe cat-back new clutch rear gears new springs shocks and struts and maybe some other stuff..but it will ride alot better, sound better and go better..cuz with that hole engine set-up w/ stock everything else..wont be so much fun to do anything but burnouts..unless thats all you wanna do..

+1.....speedstang is on it just cuz you have 50000 horsepower dosent mean its gonna hook up or stop for that matter.....you can get a quicker car just by doing suspension work plus that work will also translate into better stopping power as well (obviously) cornering....

one thing for sure do the speed density to mass air swap. I think ford racing has a kit to do this. I modded my 86GT and it ran like crap because speed density reads vacuum not air flow. new cams cause a loss in vacuum which makes the car run rich with speed density.
