Squeals on startup

I actually brought this subject up before, but the problem persists. When I start the car, I always get a squeal, which I assume is my belt slipping on a pulley. I have a Supercharger on the car, and as previoulsy suggested, I took the belt off of it. Still squeals. (Once in a while, it will squeal when I start to drive and lasts about 1 minute, then stops). It never squeals once the engine is warm, unless I turn it on, then start it again. I guess I can rule out bearings in the pulleys? I don't want to go to the expense of a new engine serpentine belt unless you guys think that will do the trick... Whaddaya think?

Its the belt slipping on the pulleys, try adjusting the tensioner, otherwise your gunna have to pop for a new belt

yeaa it could be that or the belt is on there wrong. the car will still run but if its routed wrong it will squeel for a little bit then stop. i had that problem and when i took the belt off and put it on correctly it stopped.

Hmmm. Will try those suggestions. Today I squirted a little belt dressing, which I didn't plan to do, 'cause I was told it only gums the belt up. It didn't squeal the first time I started it, but an hour later on a restart, it squealed again. Hey, thanks for the reply guys.

I can't wait to see if you are right...I'll let you know tomorrow. I bought the car three weeks ago. Am quite happy with it, having moved up from a V6. Just started using this forum, and it's great having the input from fellow Stangers.

How old is the belt? Is it cracking?

I don't understand it could be routed wrong though.. On my 87, it can only be routed one way, or else the belt is just hanging loose and the tensioner won't even do anything..

Well I looked at the belt and routing diagram, and it looks like it is routed the only way it could be. It is not exactly like the diagram though, because with the supercharger installed, the alternator is below it, and not where it originally sat. I suppose I will have to take numbers off of the belt and order a new one. When I bought the car, the engine area had been sprayed with something to 'shine it up', and I suspect that maybe if some of it got on the belts, this could have ruined the belt. I did wipe them off with brake cleaner, but no change.

it's a simple process.

it's either the belt it self or a pulley.

looks like you have done everything but replace the belt it self.

If it was a pulley, it would happen most of the time, wouldn't it? It only squeals at startup, and once in a while right after I start driving. Once the engine is warmed up though, it NEVER squeals. By the way, the belt looks fine, no cracks of frays at all.

it could be a bearing in one of the pulleys.

I wouldn't think so.

I think it would be worse when cold.

heat makes things expand.

I would have to be speedy gonzales, since the squeal only lasts one to three seconds.
