Advancing timing=how much power?

Getting the car ready for the track next Sunday. Finally got my sputtering problem fixed with the new distributor but no clue what the timing is at. Just made some marks to get it close when installing the new one. So today I filled up with 93 octane and gonna reset the timing tomorrow at work. Shooting for about 14 degrees I suppose.

Anyway, I'm just wondering how much of a difference this will make. Is there any rule of thumb as to how much power it'll add? Kinda like taking away reciprocating weight translates into "x" amount of power, blah blah blah.

Wondering if it's gonna be worth having to always put in the extra cash for gas...unless it's pretty noticeable. Wondering how well it might help at the track as well. Thanks.

+6hp / +7tq

According to the stick for destroying dyno myths and that is with a COMPLETELY stock engine, only changing the timing. It gets better from there.

Yeah, but it helps from zero to redline. Plus, the benefits are even better after you make some mods. Try it for a week and see if you can't tell a good difference.

That's what I looked at. Can't speak for everyone else though. Lol. I guess I'll try setting the timing and then go to the track but if I can't tell much of a difference, I'll probably set it lower.

6+ horsepower across the board is noticeable and then combine that with another 7hp here and 10hp there and you start to make a big difference. Its not a huge gain but it is free. Free horsepower is a no brainer.

I checked my timing and it was still at 10 degrees from when I had my E-Tests done. I walked it up to 16 degrees, no detonation and it makes a noticeable difference. The car is much peppier, and throttle response is immediate.

Definately one of the first "freeby" horsepower mods that should be done.

Yes. The timing is originally set low so that you can run 87 octane in the car. If you advance the timing and use 87 octane, you'll start to ping. Higher grade fuel will let you run more timing safely.

What, $.20/gal more than 87? Horsepower costs money, no matter what.
