I will tear into it later on when it cools down and I ACTUALLY NEED to use the heater. For a temp fix I just connected the two hoses together using some pipe fittings.

In doing so I noticed the larger hose had a metal flow reducer in it. I thought only the SSP cars came with it. I cleaned it up as it had some rust on it and pitting. The rubber ring inside it is all cracked and looks like it could fall apart any minute. Should I reuse the reducer when I r & r the heater core? Can I just take the rubber ring out and not worry about it?

You MUST use it. Otherwise it will blow up the new heater core soon and you will hear the water whistling when you drive.

THanks. What about the rubber ring inside, is it needed? Can I just remove it before it cracks and disintegrates into the cooling system? Or should I search at the local hardware store for the ring of a similar size. I don't think the previous owner ever changed the hoses or flushed the cooling system.

Ford sells them but there $$$ I have used 1/4 inch sockets. But I would think a brass item would be better.
