Torque Box
I have seen different kits to strengthen the upper and lower torque boxes. Who makes the best one for the money? I have seen the bolt on ones but if it needs to be welded, that can be done as well. Thanks.

I did the upper and lower on mine. As far as I know they all bolt in and then you have the option of welding. They bolt through the floor board, which is how they add strength. They work pretty well, but are a major PITA to install. Plan on having your car out of action for a few days, especially if you are welding. BTW I got the whole set for under $100 from Laurel mountain.

JW do i need these? WHat happens if it does break? I got a 1993 GT pretty much stock 2-spd, 3.73s, Ford racin shortys, Lakewood traction action lift bars, KC Clutch, BBK SFC, 15x10 weld DL w/ MT 275/50 15 drag radials. I launch at about 1.5 - 3.5.
I have seen them but I have no idea what they are for.

All they do is strengthen subframes.I would buy some competition engineering subframe connectors first and if you wanted to buy a set of these.Subframe connectors are highly recommended.

Ummm...no they have nothing to do with the subframe.
They keep you torque boxes from ripping. Your torque boxes are the points where the lower control arms bolt to the car. All of the drive force from your engine pushes the car forward at these points. Overtime they tend to flex back and forth enough that the metal and spot welds tend to break. Installing these will fix any looseness that is already there and help hold the torque boxes together. |
