Help carb'ed 302 /efi 302
So i bought a mustang ....
1995 Mustang (non/GT) the previous owner swapped in a carb'ed 302 out of a truck or something... Problem is the block is shot, oil and coolant shooting everywhere. I have an EFI 302 out of a lincoln Continental. My question is.... since i have 2 complete engines, what do i need to convert the EFI 5.0 into a carb'ed 5.0. reason is he cut the harness to shreds and rather than finding a new harness, i'll just go with what is in there. the 302 that's in the stang has a holley 750 and seems to be running pig rich. (i get about 80 miles on a tank) Here are my questions : can i use the EFI heads with the carb intake manifold ? would a 550 or 525 cfm carb help me lean it out a bit ? Thanks a lot ![]() P. |

The 750 is too much carb and eveything else should just bolt right up.

that's what i figured, my 455 GSX had a 750 and it was just perfect for it.
So there shouldn't be any issues ports lining up ? |

just get a 600 cfm for it and it will be fine and yes you can use the same heads

A lower flowing main body has nothing to do with how rich or lean it is running. It could run just as rich with a 390 cfm carb as with a 1050 cfm dominator. Rich/lean is all in the jetting and air bleeds. With the same jetting a 750 will run much leaner than a 650.
The reason why you need a properly sized carb for the engine has to do with vacuum signal and the enrichment circuit working correctly. With too large of a carb the carb doesn't get enough signal and you get erratic power valve operation and crappy throttle response. Your 750 is probably too large for a 302, but properly jetted and with the correct low vacuum power valves you should be able to get it to run pretty well. |
