400hp..thats not bad, but not huge, ran like it was more..that means w/ 500hp it would have been a beast..if it wasnt in a 3300lb car, more like a lightened up LX..that thing would have flown..

I used to think the same way thinking that it was more satisfying to be able to say you built your own shit. Now I'm to the point where I'd rather hand it over to someone that has experience on a professional level doing it. There are so many tricks of the trade that make a difference between winning and losing so when you get serious about racing you need to find a good engine builder.

That car would have flown if it was set up to run on motor. A tight converter and gears kills a nitrous car unless you are spraying it.

yeah well mines for street mostly..may hit track once or twice a month..and my father was a proffesional mechanic before, worked in plenty of shops and works on the side with some of his buddys on there drag cars, mostly built his friends 555ci nova, that runs high 9's consistantly, so he know's a little..just that we dont have the tools to do the crazy stuff like machine work..but have easy access to it..

now if i wanted to have a professional builder build me up a motor, i'd buy a notch and build a big block weekend warrior..but as the fact that my current stang only has 54k miles, im not gunna kill her on the track..

I use Holley and that is it. I really don't have an opinion on Proform carb parts but if they are anything like the rest of Proform products, quality isn't one of their priorities.

well since this thread is all about asking darrell questions, i might as well throw one in too, lol

so darrell, in your opinion, where is the line between fun and unstreetable, hp and tq wise? im looking at a 92 5.0 LX hatch, and i want it to be an all street car.. i want to stomp anything i will EVER come across (c6 z06 in particular) but i want it to be JUST tame enough to be driveable.. you know, without accidentally spinning the tires when i take off, and shit like that. what do you think about a 408 turbo or 408 twin turbo?

how much hp is too much? thats basically what i am trying to say.

I don't think horsepower is the limiting factor. Things like heat, fuel type, noise, vibration, power accessories, slicks, spools, etc are going to make it a pain in the ass to street drive not the horsepower.

Also BWAL be careful when you use the phrase 'stomp anything I will EVER come across'. There is always something faster lurking around the corner.

+1 I've seen people that try and drive full race cars as "street cars", I am not Knocking that at all, but you have to be able to deal with some major annoying stuff. Once I was in buddies car I wasn't familiar with, I looked over my shoulder to change lanes and split my eye-brow open on the cage I forgot was there. converters, idle, 5 gal fuel cells, drag brakes, stuff like that makes it a pain to drive on the streets IMO.

I'll just throw my 0.02 in there.

I have seen a lot of street driven 9 second mustangs recently. Mostly turbo and nitrous cars. One guy I talked to this year only had about 10K in his car and was running consistent mid 9s with a cartech twin turbo on a 331. Last I saw he was working out his methanol injection kit and hoping for 8s. Then he turns the boost controller down, puts air in the tires and drives the car about every other day. He lived 100 miles away from the track and he drives back and forth.

With cars out there like that you have to be careful who you race title for title...

also a 408 turbo is going to be in the 800-1000hp range with a correctly sized turbo...Good luck getting that to hook up on the street.

God, i'll ask Darrell a question too! What do you think your car would run if you had a stock suspension setup?

I do have a stock suspension set up for the most part. I have coil overs in the rear but they don't make the car any faster or hook any better. It 60 footed the same with stock springs. I only have coil overs for tire clearance.
