bigger is better . . . . right?

well i don't know if you guys remember me but i'm the guy who's puttiing the 700 hp chevy 350 in the 91 gt. i have about enough money to buy the conversion kit (k-member, coil overs, trans mount etc..) and get started on the swap. then i began to think that i'm most likely not going to get much traction with that kind of power. sooooo how much work, tools, parts, fabrication and and stuff am i looking at to fit 10, maybe 10 1/2 inchers in the back...i would really like any pics or videos of anything that people have done in the past themselves ...maybe i could follow it doing my own. thanks for the help guys. dont be too harsh on me

27 x 10.5 tires fit fine on a 4.5-5.5 inch backspace 15 inch wheel.

LXs sometimes fit 28 tall tires.

I have 26 x 11.5 ET streets in my stock wheel wells with a 9 inch wide prostar with 5 inchs backspacing.

A 28x10.5 slick fits on a 15x10 wheel with 6.5" backspacing on any 79-93 Mustang. If you can't hook a 28x10.5 slick then you have issues elsewhere. You will have to roll the fender lips and do some work to the inner wheel well with a 3lb mallet. You will also have to watch the front and rear portions of the quarter panel if you exceed 140mph due to tire growth.

backspacing is the distance from the mounting surface of the wheel to the back edge of the wheel. Basically the higher the backspacing, the further into the wheel well the wheel goes. It is important to get the right backspacing when you buy wheels, or no tires are going to fit correctly. 5.5 inch is a good starting point. Really fox mustangs have a pretty good wheel well. 26 x 11.5 tires are good for like 1.4 60 foot times or better. Then again people are running 9s in the 235 drag radial class, so...you really don't need to put a big tire on there.

Darrell, I am assuming because you have 9 inch ends on your housing that is why you need 6.5 inch backspacing. Or do you have it mini-tubbed? For most mustangs a 6 inch backspacing will put the wheel right up against the inner wheel well. 6.5 would cause some serious issues. My street tires are on a 5.9 inch backspaced wheel and I had to do some inner fender massaging to get those to fit.

I've used 6.5 backspace on 15x10 wheels on every Mustang I've owned. You do need to massage the inner fender well a bit but it takes about 15 minutes per side. My current car doesn't count because the rear end is narrowed and it is mini tubbed but the last 5 or 6 Mustangs I've had have all used a 6.5 backspace.

Do you mean 10 1/2 in wheel?? It will stick out at least 1 inch further than it should and you will run into fender lip issues with a tall tire. But yeah, it can be done.

You only need a 8" or 9" wide wheel for 11.5" slicks...

A 10" wheel with 5.5" backspace will look OK, 6" backspace would be ideal, but you'll have some rubbing issues.

so let me see if i have this right. i can buy a set of 9 in rims for the back and backspace them 5.5ish and a i'll be able to fit a set of 11.5 wide slicks on them....with a little "inner fender massaging"

You dont need to be building a car if you didnt recognize the difference in those 2 wheels. One is a 5x4.5/4.75 bolt circle and the other is 4x4.25/4.5 bolt circle. In other words one is five lug and one is 4 lug and yes the 275 drag radial would work but,i would use a mickey thompson not a bfg

I've never had problems with 10" wheels.

15x10 wheels are common on Mustangs.

You do have to roll the fenders and haft to have a 6.5 backspacing.

Yes you do with a 10" wheel but that is not a big deal.
