a buddy has a chance to pick one up for cheap, is the motor worth it or is it a crappy motor and can u stick it in a mustang??

i did some research the motor is a 1/2" longer stroke then a 351, has a 1" higher deck, because of the longer stroke they had probs with the compression with the 351 heads, and its pretty much a motor for high torque at low speeds,

i hope thats about right anyone have hands on or experiance with this motor

yeah stay away like someone said its a boat ancor the 400M is not a mustang motor its a truck motor that is based off the 351M block not worth buying and putting in your mustang. It would also be hard to find a transmission that would work in it for the mustang too.

Like notsoslow50 said just get a 351W if you are looking for something bigger than the 302

The 400m had some serious casting issues up until about midyear 77. Blocks made before that time were prone to severe cracking at the waterjacket into the lifter valley. Definatley find out what year block it is first.

You can buy spacer plates to run the 351C 4V heads/intake on a 400 but its up to you if its worth it or not. I wouldnt waste the time.

dont get me wrong alot of the people in here know alot of what they are talking about.....but a 400 chevy block is one BADASS block. especialy if you want to either stroke it or make it a d-stroker (put 350 parts in it) it destroy either a chevy or ford 350/351

know that the 400 is a nice motor..but would only smash a 351 if 400 is stroked and 351 isnt..

if you zero deck the 400 and put some good flat top pistons with an RV cam you can make the world turn backwards with the torque it will make.

the 400 has some cooling issues when you start to spin it past 6k. You need to modify the cooling passages to really take advantage of the motor.

Best thing to do with a 400 is destroke it to a 377 and spin the fuck out of it and put the gas to it and let it eat.

Most of the factory Chevy 400 blocks have thin cylinder walls. If you can find a good block you are in luck. The cool thing about the 400 chevy is the 4.125 bore. Too bad Ford never made a factory small block with a bore that big.
