buy a crate motor or have the fun of building your own
this would be my first mustang. I love notch backs and i was wondering what you guys think. If you read this comment...Would you rather buy a 400hp crate motor with top notch reliabilty or would you rather slowly build your self up...You know start with a stroker and put exhaust and a new manifold/carb and cams and so on and slowly see you car get faster...not just jumping into a fast motor and your done...lemmie guys know

I have no desire to build a short block. I would rather just let the machine shop do that.
I have installed numerous cams, heads, intakes, etc.....and I am sure I could build a short block if I wanted to.....but its just a whole lot easier to let the shop build the short, and then finish it off myself. On my current set up I just said F it and I let the shop do the entire project. They are a very repuatable shop with an extensive racing background and for once in my life, money wasnt really an object. |

I just got my first stang also and I was stuck on that question.I just decided to build it myself so far I havent finished but it will be done this Sunday and I am exited to see the difference.I pretty much have everything after market but the block.I am taking my time on that but it will be a 306 or something close to that.I am looking foward to dyno and going to Moroso track on Oct.6. sorry to get off topic but I think building it yourself is more fun and also you will know everything about everything in your car.JMO.Good Luck

I have never built a bottom end...I am comfortable doing everything from the cam up though.

well no jordan i've most shit towards 347's...i had another person today tell me he heard 347's arent for the street and 331's last ALOT longer..but im still gunna buy it..
dont get a crate motor, then you might as well call it fords car not yours, if you do it youself or with help, but still have you're hand in it, its yours respectivly.. i say buy the 347 shortblock from CHP or yes even DSS..then build up top end yourself, or buy a block, buy stroker bottom end kit, do it yourself, and then top end..

5.4 rods are not bad,but there not as good as 5.315 inch rods and the rod and stroke ratio is not bad, just let people think what they want.
