How much do you know about rear ends?

Planning on changing out the ring and pinion in my 88 for 3:73 and was wondering before I start do the rear axles have to be shimmed or do they just snap in with the C clip also what is the stock spline count and any suggestion on swapping to more or less splines?

stock spline is 28, if you have the money and your thinkin about takin it to the track while your back threre you might as well put some c clip eliminators and 31 spline axles in

When changing out rear end gears in a 8.8 no matter what it is. You will need a shim kit. You can buy a master rebuild kit online at most mustang shops. Most of the time when i do rear ends, the pinion shim never gets changed because the housing is the same. Just the backlash shims normally you will need new ones when replacing gears. If you want protection, go with a trac-lok rebuild kit as well. Ans replace the axle bearings and seals. Good luck and remember to use friction modifier unless going synthetic.
