Bad Water Pump?

How can you tell when a water pump goes?

I think I may have figured it out, but let me know. Over the last couple days I noticed some water under my car when I would leave for work in the morning. I really didn't think much of it until it became more and more. When I came home from work today I left the mtor idling and looked under the car. There was constant drainage from the water pump area. After jacking up the front of the car the drainage was coming from the hole in the bottom of the water pump. Isn't that a sign of pump failure or the beginning signs of it?

I was thinking of getting the Edelbrock 8840:

Any opinions? Thanks.

Forgot to add that car seemed to run the same temperature at speed but would get hotter faster when at idle in a drive-thru or in stop & go traffic on the freeway. I figured these were all signs, but was hoping I would get more time out of it. Oh well.

I just replaced mine as well.

There is a weep hole on top that will leak. Also the gasket between the pump and the metal backing plate will leak at the bottom. And or the gasket can leak. But watch out because i have replaced quite a few w/pumps, and radiators because the shaft broke off. So dont wait too long.

Is it worth getting an Edelbrock or other name brand pump versus going to Autozone and getting a standard replacement Cardone for $35-50 or a HD replacement from cardone for $60-90?

Paid 60 for a ford replacement. ( new ) I work here. So the discount...might cost you more. I love ford parts and if possible i dont use aftermarket.

A matter of opinion and chance. Any brand you could get can fail. I replaced one with a $30 Autozone special. It lasted about 2 months. They gave me a new one under the lifetime warranty and I've been using it for a few years now without a problem. How much is your potential labor worth?

I understand that. But considering my motor is stock and will be for quite some time I don't think I need to spend $200 on a radiator. Whereas if I had a "no expense spared" motor, I would think a little harder about it. I think I'm just going to get the HD unit from Napa. Thanks.

I meant $200 on a water pump. I have a Fluidyne radiator so the $200 on a radiator is out the window.
