new rebuild,big timing problems,need help

i just rebuilt my 5.0 and installed a ford e-cam,ford racing timing chain, trick flow heads, bbk ssi intake,70 mm throttle body,42lb injectors,80 mm mass, new billit distributor.i check my timing and its so far off i cant read it.on the timing light its prob like 50 degrees,i know this cant be right.i can pull it down to like 30adv.but it wont hardly stay running.ive pulled the timing cover off and everythings fine.installed the cam,dot to dot.before the rebuild i had no problem setting the timing at 10 base.after some troubleshooting i replaced the balancer but its still the same.can anyone tell me what ive done?need help please.ive had a few people look at this and no one can give me an answer.

WHat kind of balancer? My fluidampr reads 30 degrees at top dead center, so I had to remark this as zero. Double check your top dead center.

Also check that your distributor is pointing directly at the 1 position at TDC.

distributor points right at the #1.im ashamed to say the balancer is from advance auto but the factory read the same.ill pull the piston up top tomorrow and see what i can find.is it really that common to get one that reads that far off?every one else tells me to just turn it til the motor frees up and run it there, but im putting a 60mm turbo on in a couple weeks and cant chance it without knowing where im at.

whao whao...WTF are you doing with 42lbers..and with the 60mm turbo go like 60lbers..but 42lbs are HUGE for that..that will cause i nice problem when you get it running right..

im having trouble following you.are you saying my injectors are too small or what.ive got stock bottom end,so ill only be running maybe 8lb of boost.what kind of problems do you think ill have?i went ahead and installed them before the turbo to get all the bugs out and its running pretty good right now, except the timing issue.alittle rich but not bad.

well on my fluidampr the whole balancer body is welded, but it still reads 30 degrees off. I think it has something to do with the style of pointer you use. Different years have the pointer mounted in a different spot.

Are you setting the base timing with the pin pulled?

Anyway, bring it to top dead center, make sure the rotor in the dist is pointing straight back and note the location of the timing pointer. Your dist could be a tooth off, or your pointer is wrong.

As a side note, engines will run really well at like 40 degrees advance at idle. You may not have a timing issue, maybe just too much fuel. You could try turning the fuel pressure down.

42lbs are WAY TOO BIG...you should only have like 24lbs on max right now..put the 42lbers on when you get the turbo..but 60lbers would be better for that turbo

60 lb/hr injectors for a 60 mm turbo???

You so crazy....

60 lb/hr injectors are good for like 700 hp, you'll never see that with a 60mm turbo. 42 lb injectors are already good enough to split the block.

Plus at 8lbs of boost he'll be lucky to see 400 hp, so he really only needs 30 lb injectors for his turbo setup...

42 lb/hr injectors are big for his current set-up, but he should be able to get it running right with low enough fuel pressure (25-30 PSI at idle)

Well i know my injectors are too big for my current setup, but whos gonna go buy smaller injectors to run for a month then put the 42s in.id rather go with 42s and cut the fuel back than30s and end up lean.ive also got a mallory comp fi.fuel pump with 8-an lines to and from the tank.at 32lbs of fuel pressure the car doesnt smoke any.im sure at some point ill go up to 10-12 lbs of boost and i wont have to worry about fuel.i may be wrong on my figures but if i make 350 hp now and i up the boost to 10lb,that should put me around 580 hp and if thats right ill be good on fuel

are you timing it on the compression stroke? Sounds like even though you have the #1 piston TDC and the rotor button pointing at #1 plug wire, that you might be on the wrong stroke. Tried pulling the dist up and turning the rotor 180 degrees?
