GT40p head work?

Hello everyone, this is my first post on this site ! Sorry if this has been discussed b4, but I did not see a search tab.

First of all I was planning on getting the trickflow top-end kit for my car, but have came across a deal that is hard to pass up. I have a chance to get a set of gt40p heads off an explorer in a junkyard for free, and no Im not stealing them. I was looking up information on head work for these heads, and was wondering what you guys would recommend as far as porting, valves, etc to get the most performance possible? Please be as specific as possible as I do not know much about heads.

Also with these heads would it be worth getting a custom grind cam or would I be better off with an alphabet cam or something along those lines?

BTW my car is a 92 GT w/112k miles. Current mods consist of edelbrock performer intake, 75mm tb, 3:73s, pullies, and full exhaust. And yes I know I will need different headers for these heads.

Thanks for your time,
Red

get the trick flow top end with custom cam..and why would you even think of GT40p's over twisted wedge heads...port the shit out of the GT40p's and you wont get half the flow of twisted wedge 2.02's

The reason I am considering them is the price is hard to beat and I already have an intake manifold, although the trickflow one is better. College kids dont have much money :wink! I know how much lighter/better aluminum heads are, but my question was not concerning which should I get. Although, I do appreciate your opinions.

Does anyone know what can be done to these heads to maximize their performance.

Thanks for your time.

mine were just ported with a dremel by a guy that does very good...they came out of the machine shop with a nice valve job, new locks, springs, and retainers.

Mine are the GT40 heads.

I hear ya on the college budget thing man!

There is a lot of porting info if you google it. ie tmoss, standard abrasives, etc. free is good but nothing is free! karkraft sells a gt40p kit on ebay, new valves, springs, seals and locks and more. the headers are pricey $230. unless you have long tube headers then they will work with a little modification. the search button is the third from the left under the mm banner. good luck.

ps the second sticky: tech articles, has head porting info.

I'm also getting a deal on p heads for 70 bucks and my tach. There are no cracks. I'll have a machine shop port to gasket size (my motor is stock) but the problem I have is headers. You need special ones I hear, like bbk or mac. I have the equal length mac shorties. Does anyone know if they'll work with the spark plugs?

Go get the GTps, your education is more important than a set of cylinder heads. I have a P-headed Explorer in my LX with long tube BBKs.Runs damn good enough to get you in trouble with the LEOs. If you do run a set of LT headers, take a plug socket and cut it down and cut a groove in the side so you can access the plugs on numbers 5,6, and i think 7 also. Id have to go look on number 7, i cant remember.

The thing of it is, if you do all that machine work to the p heads, you won't be far off of used set of trick flow's!

In an earlier post you stated you would have a machine shop port them, now you say you are having them ported for free. Not many machine shops port for free.

I guess it comes down to, its your money, spend it the way you want!

For a N/A set up the gt40 irons are all you need, there is a local guy making over 300rwhp on a set of non p heads with bigger valves and port work, I think he had them decked too. Even with the trick flow top end kit your barely gona crack 300hp with a good tune on a stock 302 rotating assembly. Even if you have to pay for port work and you get the heads for 100$ then you will have saved some money and be able to make those heads give you the same results the higher end heads will. But of course that will be abouttthe max your gona get out of them. If you plan on a strocker or boost in the future, afr or tf heads would be a better choice in the long run

As far as headers, normal bbk shortys with 90 degree plug boots get the job done, I'm willing to bet ur macs will work too with the 90 boots

get the p heads and go to college! BUT freinds dad or not. he will prolly just clean them up and gaskit match them. the intake ports are allready as big as fel-pro 1250's, the ex side has some room though. doint expect any real port work on a favor. it takes alot of time to do. i had about 20 hours in the ex side of my p heads.(left the intake alone). a few years ago i put 60-70 hours in my 455 olds heads for a jet boat motor.
p heads:

these heads are sitting in the workshop with freash valve job and crane beehives waiting for me to get my ass in gear on rebuilding my other motor. good luck!
