the idling kinda sucks

my 1988 mustang gt with a computer from 1989, c&L maf conversion idles like poo until fully warmed up. It will stall at first turn of the key, and i literally have to be gassing it (i keep it at like 1400 rpm) for 20 seconds and then until 3-4 minutes later its barely keeping itself alive. Then it idles fine once it warms up. Can i clean something? Do i have a serious problem? IMO i think for ME its a serious problem, i want to be able to turn that damn key and ITS EFI!!! it should keep itself going! thanks alLl!

here's what i would do if i were you. i would go back over every detail of the mass air conversion and make sure i did everything right. if the problem persists then i would clean the IAC and make sure it is working properly and i would Check for Codes including the cylinder balance test. then i would post my results on here and see if TENGRAM can help diagnose the problem

good luck

yeah, what he said!

I would personally do the easy stuff first...Clean the IAC, and clean the MAF. If that doesnt solve it, go back through the conversion. lol

had similar problems with different cars slim chance but check temperature sensor for computer(two wire sensor) if its unpluged or bad the it will read somewhere around -40 or so below and dump fuel therefore having to gas it,but when it warms up the temperature in the cylinder helps burn off the extra fuel

its probly not as simple as this but my car was doing about that exact same thing and all my problem was a vacum hose that had broke from dry rot.....i fixed it and it immediately fixed the idleing

What injectors and fuel pressure are you using.

2 things I would try,

1) try rotating the C&L mass air. My car idles best with the MAF at about 2 o'clock, instead of 12 o'clock. By rotating the MAF it picks up a different air signal which can greatly affect the idle quality.

2) try lowering your fuel pressure by 5 PSI if you have an adjustable fuel pressure regulator.

C&Ls are known for poor idle quality, welcome to the club.

it sounds like he's still got 19 lb injectors and the right C&L for them, so that should not be causing his idle issue. mine idles perfectly and i hve seen many many others with C&Ls have no idles problems.

Yeah, Rick Anderson is the one that gave me this tip...

he is also the one that told me C&Ls are known for their idle problems
