alright so i'm just curious, what all are the parts needed to build a good engine. let's just say one buys a short block, what all else does he need?

also, around how much would all that cost? well, a pretty good dealing HP engine. past 300HP N/A

Cost depends on what parts you use and who builds it.

Do you plan on going with a power adder down the road?

There is no real answer for you since your just curious.
If you want a street/strip engine. First you need to know your budget.
It might be more cost effective to just buy a long block that is already built and ready to install if you are going to have to pay somebody to build it for you.
Or you could just start off by buying the block itself. decide if you want to build a stroker or regular engine. going this route you will need EVERYTHING from the crankshaft, pistons and rods, heads, intake, front engine parts like water pump, alternator, pulleys, and a flywheel. plus all the other stuff.
Most people buy a short block when they already have an engine so that they can use a lot of the existing parts.
If you were to just buy a short block it depends where you get it from, some sell the short block with heads already installed, some don't.
There are just way to many variables involved to list all the things with price ranges and reach a HP goal.

You start by planning your build spend as much time comparing products and how well they work togather. Thaen you enginer your build and start the build. The key to cost control in research, planning your build; than build your plan. look at 10k to 15k to get into the 12s

i got into 12's w/ about $5 including cost of car..($2400)

you can call up coast high performance and talk to them bout building you an 302 stroker or 351w stroker, i suggest an 347ci stroker..they can build you a complete balanced 347 shortblock for about $2200..then look into the trickflow top end kit and that w/ have everything you need, except the supporting mods like TB, MAF, injectors, AFPR, fuel pump, UDP, and full exhuast, that kits about $2500..and w/ that you should be around 425hp to the crank..tuned, maybe a little more..
