Timing

First, I am a new forum poster, and I really like that there is a nice techie forum here to brain pick for ideas, and such. I have owned several Foxes, and only once did I go to the dark side, and bought a 96 Z28. I owned it for a week, and traded it, for another Fox, he he he.

Ok, funny story

I bought a 1987 GT Mustang convertible. I have been tying up loose ends, on a rather well taken care of car. I grabbed a new oil pan, intake gaskets, valve cover gaskets, and a few other miscellaneous things. the oil pan is because it had been damaged, and patched, but the patch was leaking, slightly. When I was cleaning the engine, to replace the oil pan, it would not start. In my haste, I pulled off the dry(dammit!) distributor cap, and went to put it back on. I then noticed that the distributor hold down nut was loose, and of course, I totally screwed my timing. The car really then would not start. I turned the cap, and got the car running, like shit. I do know that it was turned without the spout connector removed(read that article) My question is, do I just redo the timing, from scratch, and is it detrimental that I turned the cap, without removing the spout? I am not a master mechanic, but I am mechanically inclined, and also not afraid to let a professional take care of my problem. I have never set timing on a car before. When I aim the light at the harmonic balancer, what, on the marks am I looking for?

any help, or suggestions?

Thanks
