Exactly What Makes A "306"

I just got my a mustang yesterday and the guy said it has a "306" i know obviously the GT's came with a 302, but why would you bore it out to just a 306? im guessing, (im coming here for a better answer) that the engine was rebuilt and bored (how much) for some reason? pls help, i just want to know why.

more than likely it was just rebuilt and when you rebuild a motor typically its bored over. its just like re assuring the rings will seal correctly because there could be tiny scratches or somethin if it isnt rebored

boring an engine doesnt make a whole lot of extra cubic inches.....with a big block you would see a lot bigger difference with the same amount of bore because it gona be a type of exponential increase.....but even then its not a huge gain in cubes

boring to a 306 makes no real power. its about 1.5hp per cubic in. making it have 6hp more than it had as a 306..so for $500 not worth it...now its is worth it when you add supporting mods and is an almost must have of stroking an engine..when rebuilding it is usual that is isnt bored out..just rebuilt, the boring will make block fresher..so unless you are doing more work to it, you're going to be slower than a 302 w/ underdrive pullys!!!

also ask previous owner for paper work on this..cuz ALOT of people say stuffs be done that cant be seen by the eye immediatly and its NEVER been done!!!

Not even worth it to change your motor to a 306. Why might you ask because your going to have to buy new pistons anyway. You should just go straight for a stroker like a 331 or 347 because you will already have the engine completley apart and you should just go the rest of the way to make it have just that much more power

The only time boring an engine should be done is when the cylinders are worn.

boring it..you said you rlly never have to bore an engine unless the cylinder walls need it..about 90% of strokers are bore out!!!

And why is that? Because 90% of them are used engine blocks. If you started with a fresh block all you would need is final finishing on the cylinders.

And that goes back to worn cylinders. If you are tearing down a used block to put a longer stroke crank in, etc. you might as well spend the extra $150 to have it bored to clean up the cylinders.

But yeah, boring an engine to add a few cubic inches is a waste.

OK..you have to bore out the block to make a 331, 347, 393,408 ect...you could stroke a motor w/ out boring it, then why does CHP, DSS bore all there new blocks?
