Medical grade nitrous oxide requires a license to purchase, automotive grade does not. The only difference between the two is automotive nitrous contains Sulfur Dioxide to sicken/kill you if you try to get high off it. Other than the Sulfur Dioxide, it is the same stuff. N20

yeah, non-medical grade nitrous contains 100 parts per million (ppm) sulfur dioxide (SO2).

You'd be hard pressed to get sick or die from it. At 10 ppm the smell is so strong you would have to leave the room. It is the same stuff they put in natural gas to make it easy to notice a leak.

The LCLO which is the concentration at which you have a very low chance of death is 1000 ppm, 10 times higher than in the nitrous and 100 times higher than what most people can tolerate.

Basically the SO2 is a deterrent because it smells awful.

That's odd because there have been people over the last 10 years or so that have been sick and some deaths from huffing automotive nitrous just in my area and who knows how many in the rest of the country. The cause was always pointed to the sulfur dioxide.

i think it's wrong for the nitrous plus companies to try to keep people from getting high off of their product by putting a deadly chemical in the nitrous.. you'd think they'd require you to get a special license to run nitrous before they did that

People die from huffing N20, that is a fact, they die due to asphyxiation or nervous system failure, not b/c of SO2. They would have died regardless of medical grade or non-medical grade. I personally doubt anyone would actually huff non-medical grade N2O, it would be like breathing directly out of an elephants ass, it would make most people gag just from the smell. Besides you can buy food grade whip its cheap

There is no possibility of dieing from SO2 exposure from a nitrous bottle, the concentration isn't high enough. Trust me I deal with MSDS on a regular basis, I have a PhD in chemistry, I know what is toxic and what isn't.

Huh, I guess its not a suprise to see the media twist things and place the blame on the wrong cause. Anything to make the story more dramatic I guess.
