NEED HELP PLANNING 86 5.8 MONSTER

ok so i got my stock 5.0 h.o f.i motor out of my 86 hb and its parked for the winter. Im painting it all black, tinting the windows, putting black cobra replicas on it and a bbk suspension kit on it and redoing the interior. but enough wit the shit dat dont matter. my engine is a stock engine except edelbrock upper intake plenum and cold air kit. i want a 351 but have a lot of questions about it. I have a set of 351 cylender heads bored and honed but need rockers valves and all that good stuff. will they fit on my engine ??? also im planning on either buying a 351 block and building around it or just boring mine out to 5.8 . which would be better?? fuel injected to carb,,, parts needed ??? cam change??? intake??? also will i need a different trans with the 351s power??? help plz

you cant bore a 302 to a 351 and my suggestion would be to find a 351w block, and how do you have heads that are bored and honed?????

those heads were ported and polished not bored. And you can not bore your 302 to a 351!!!you can only bore a 302 to a 310.But you could build a 347 stroker which involved notching the cylinder skirts, boring the cylinder walls 0.030 and putting in a stroker kit

You're probably refering to port and polish not bore and hone. Are they windsor heads or cleveland. They both will work on the 302 but clevelands take modifications. You can't bore the 302 to a 351 but you can bore and stroke it to 347. If you want a 351 find one from a salvageyard or buy one new if you have $$. You will also need different headers and motor mounts and oil pan and accesory brackets. Jegs has the kit. Carb would be the simplest thing to do. What Jordan said. He must have wrote that when i was typing this.

get a 351 from the junkyard, preferably something in the 1970 era, and get the bored out

stroke it, then put those heads you got on it

then all you need is the EFI stuff and you're set (and that you can get most from the junkyard)

but if you want to buy it all brand spankin new and waste all sorts of money, you can get the crate motor from ford

The '86 is an odd year in a lot of respects, and you pretty much can't bolt anything to it without some kind of major work somewhere else. The stock block is pretty much junk for doing any performance stuff. You can't even change the cam out without replacing or at least flycutting the pistons. If you are talking about bolting the heads and all to the '86 block, you can't use the pistons that are in it. They're forged, but not flycut.

The electronics are junk too. It's a speed-density system as opposed to mass-air, so any performance work you do to it will not be corrected for in the brain. If you make it breathe better you can't add fuel to the mix and the lean mixture will punch a hole in a piston in a heartbeat, if a valve doesn't do it first.

If you upgrade the motor in an '86 in any way past removing the airbox and bumping the timing, you will need to upgrade everything that pertains to the motor, with the possible exception of the ignition. But if you're going that far, I kinda like the idea of the 408 stroker.

He might be a newbie, but I like his answer and I'll back it up.

depends on how much money he has..if he's rolling in it, i say dart 347 TT FTW..if not find a 351w out of an older truck/ SUV or full size car..

you could easily find a 302 out of an 87-92 mustang, have it sent out to be bored out and hyperfluxed, then get that scat stroker bottem end jordan suggested into it and, there ya go 347 stroker w/ 0 miles..then find either get a trick flow top end kit, build you're own, or find used parts...

but what are you're plans with this car?
