to my breaking point....help!!!!

so we replaced the head gaskets on my 347 last night. got everything together today and fired the car up.

it acts EXACTLY like it did before. wont idle, steam comming out of the oil filler neck, and once the temp starts to climb, it shoots to 200 and continues to climb. I shut the car off immediately when it hit 200.

im freaking lost. I have no idea what the problem could be.

I guess the next step is to check compression in each cylinder and go from there.

did you have the head checked when you replaced the gaskets to make sure it was not cracked or warped . I have had cracks so small you cant see them put they are there....that would be my next step bro

Might have to have everything magnafluxed and have the block checked for thickness if it comes down to it.

You did have everything just machined and the motor was built not to long ago. Thats sounds like it could be something wrong there like a cracked head now or cracked block. How long did it run good before this started

Do you have air trapped in the system? Did you check the block and head for cracks and straightness? Did you do a compression check before you tore it down?

I had the heads completely re worked. they were shaved 5 thousanths. I know the heads arent the problem.

I did not pull the engine and check the block. looks like maybe I should have.

I did not check compression before the tear down because the dyno tuner said it "lifted a head" while being tuned.

and would having air trapped in the system cause steam to come out of the filler neck?

also a leakdown test... ive seen were theres a hairline crack in the cylinder wall that caused the same symptoms, pluse the leakdown test will also cover a compression test at the same time

Something to try, jack the front of the car up high enough so the radiator cap is the highest point of the cooling system. Take the cap off and let the car run until it gets to operating temperature. You will probably see the system burp a few times. After you've let it run at operating temperature for a while shut it off and put the cap back on. See if burping the air out fixes the problem.

My crank case steams at the slightist ammount of moisture. Burping the system is extremely important for the cooling system to work properly. Once I dident have my overflow hooked up right and it made the temp crazy.

ok guys. stupid question.

on the block, and heads, there are two pair of water jackets on each end.

if you hold the head gasket and look at it, only ONE end has the holes for these jackets.

im assuming this could be my problem. did i put the head gasket on backwards?

Did you put the part of the head gasket that says "front" toward the front on each side? If you didn't or if you don't know or remember you need to tear the engine back down and find out.

thats the problem right there.

im a dumb ass.....lol

I had the gaskets on with the two water jacket holes towards the front of the block instead of the rear.

cometic gaskets dont say anything on them about top or bottom or front or rear.

I just made a dumb rookie mistake.

should have had my mechanic put it back together instead of doing it myself.

a very time consuming and expensive learning experience.
