One thing I hated about driving my Mustang in the snow is the traction-lok. In theory both tires with traction would seem to be a benefit but both spinning even at extremely low speed put the rear-end in a slide that follows the angle of the road. If you really are going to drive your stang in the snow, get some 15 inch 10 holes off craigslist and some skinny winter tiers for them (185 to 205 maybe). It may look funny but so would your car sitting in a ditch all banged up.

I don't know if your joking or not about the chains but I have them (the cable type) for my three cars that aren't Mustangs. They cost about $30 for a set at some Wal-marts and I leave them in the trunk. They only take about 10 minutes to put on and they work great if you don't mind a little rumble and staying under about 30 mph. I live in an area that is not worth putting on snow tires and occasionally travel to areas that get more snow so even using them only one time will get my $30 worth out of them.
I also carry a toe strap but one thing I noticed about GT (and maybe even an LX) is they do not have those toe points or hooks to attach a strap if needed.

Because there is not as much rubber on the ground so they wont have more surface area to slip on

Yes, like he said. A skinner tire will be able to "push" down into the snow and get to bite because you are concentrating the weight of your car into a smaller area. This is why chains are so effective, they provide a small concentrated area that can dig down in the snow. Wider tires will ride on top of the snow or tend to plow through the snow, kind of like if you were wearing snow shoes to keep you from sinking down in.

What about a spare set of tires for when you know it is going to snow? Either way, a wide winter tire is not as good as a narrow winter tire but both are way better then an all season tire of the same size.

k thanks for the advice guys, the way i look at it i might as well give my nice cobra's the winter off and throw the stock GT rims back on so they take any salt/sand damage. i already have new BFG Traction T/A's on 2 and 2 baloney skins im gonna burn off and replace with snow tires for the shitty NE winter im not lookin foward too
