Tranny Probs

ok.. this is my first manual that ive owned.. here are the probs that i am curently encountering.. first, i have a problem putting it in 3rd when im shifting fast and sometimes it pops out of gear in 2nd.. second, when i go to put it in reverse imeditaly after coming to a stop, keep in mind that the clutch is completely decompressed, when i put the shifter into reverse it grinds gears like i didnt even decompress the clutch. it only does this is reverse.. any clue?

mine grinds when going into reverse too, i find that putting it into fourth first and then reverse it's alot smoother. Not sure about the popping out of gear problem

i had 3 mustangs and they all do the reverse thing. Throw it in 1st gear then reverse. Works like a charm everytime.

I haven't done it in a while but i think there are 1 or 2 holes on the passenger side of the tranny. If there are two, the top one you should take out, and fill the transmission from the shifter until the fluid seeps out that hole. Just get one of those Haynes Manuals from Aid Auto or something. Alot of good info.

Reverse gear is non synchronized, it isn't the gear spinning, it is the clutch and input shaft. If you shift into any synchronized gear first (first through fifth) you will slow down the clutch and shaft and allow smooth shifting into reverse.

This is normal operation for a T5. Having it pop out of gear and hard shifting into 3rd might be due to a bent 2-3 shift fork.

Checking the fluid...take out the top plug with a 3/8" ratchet. If fluid comes out it is full. If not stick your finger in the hole and feel if there is fluid just at the lower level of the plug. If so, it is full. If not, get a 1 qt bottle and attach a piece of 3/8" hose to it. Put the hose in the hole and attach the other end to the bottle and squeeze. You can fill the trans this way without having to remove the shifter. When you put the plug back in, use quality silicone sealant and do not over tighten as you can crack the case by overtightening the plug.

BTW WC T5s use Dex III ATF, not gear oil. Putting gear oil in them will cause roller bearing failure.

is there supposed to be a silicone sealant around the shifter plate?

a couple of days after i bought the car i heard what sounded like air excaping from like a balloon but it came from the center console.. when i changed the oil i saw some silicone just falling out from the plate and the tranny. that normal too?

you might have a plugged vent on the top of the trans causing pressure to build up inside. This can eventually cause a leak. There should be silicone in between the shifter base and the trans. The T5 uses no gaskets only silicone to seal it.
