My Mustang Days Are Over

Hey guys, I know I just sporadically jump in here and leave nowadays but here's something for ya.

After a long uphill battle to get this thing going again (uphill both ways, in the snow, with an oil pan under each arm) I had it purring one day and dead the next. I manage to drop a nut down the #5 intake runniner while putting on or removing the upper intake (the last 10 minutes of work left on the car). As soon as I got started the car, I shut the thing off when I heard something in there. I didn't rev the engine, I didn't idle it. I turned it off as soon as the starter engaged.

But that didn't stop the piston top from getting beaten. What I can't fucking understand is how I managed to crack the cylinder wall in less than 1 second of the engine running. I know I don't have the experience that some of our members have, but I've never heard of a naturally aspirated 302 cracking a cylinder wall under any condition. Splitting top to bottom running a bone stock 302 with 300 shot? Sure. Cracking a cylinder wall sitting on jackstands? No.

Anyways, what pisses me off the most is the $400 in head work that has not, and will never, see the street. Not to mention 4 years worth of parts that I've put into it being useless now.

So now I have two options; maybe you can help. Does anyone know how much a 302 shortblock runs? What's a 351 shortblock run? Do you have one you'd like to get rid of? Are you in the Southeast? Also, if I get a 351, I'll have lots of juicy 302 parts to unload, so maybe there's a trade to be made?

Here are some pics to show you how not to end 4 years worth of work. The lesson here is count all the bolts you start with, all the bolts you take off and all the bolts you put on. I had an aftermarket intake that I was putting on, and I bought some studs, nuts and bolts to make it work so I didn't notice that I had any more or less than what I started with, since I was just grabbing stuff out of a pile. Count everything!

If you want to see how things really look (or you think you have any great advice) there are high res pictures at http://www.mikebert.com

Stock crank? Because I already have a crack.

I want something that will play nice on the street. What was it built for and why are you looking to get rid of it? PM with a price though.

No man, I don't see me bouncing back from this one. The Mustang used to be my only car, but now it's not and I have lost damn near all my interest in it. Besides, I had done all I could do, engine wise to and keep it an NA 302. Yeah, I could get better parts than what I've installed, but I've built is as much you can (barring stroking, etc). If everything I did worked when I turned the key, that just meant the project was over. Now that the block is done, it means the project is over anyway. I feel like I want something new, so here's a great excuse to start.

I really don't even want to put a 302 back in it. I'd rather go from 302 EFI to carb'ed 351 just to do something new.

Sorry, but I can't afford something like that. I just bought a truck recently and I was just looking for *a* 351, not a *built* 351. Shit, bone stock would be fine for me.

Besides, I think your 351 may give my stock T5 the kiss of death. In a really hot, lesbians with lots of tongue way, but still a kiss of death.

That's why I came back.

I can't even find sleeves. Aluminum Ford blocks, yeah. But not this. Plus, if it's $90, plus a new piston and valves, I'd just as well get a shortblock. Unless you know of some place that sells the parts cheap.
