Explorer Engine

i have the opportunity to get a 5.0 explorer engine from a friend of mine for 800$ and was wondering if its a good idea to swap it into my 88gt. it came out of a 97 explorer with 70,000miles. its mass air so thats a plus for me. all it needs is a waterpump.

so i was wondering...
would the computer work in my car or would i have to find one from a fox?
are the bottom ends built the same or no?
is there any other things i should know about the explorer engines?

and if its a bad idea is 800 too much to buy it for the heads and intake then sell the rest?

yeah the motor in the car is good, we have to pull it for the winter anyway to replace the front and rear cranks seals +oil pan gasket. we were gonna throw some new rings in it and i was gonna mild port(mostly clean up) the heads + intake.

It's got a better intake and heads, as for the computer... you'd need a mass air one at least and have to do a little wiring on the harness.

All it has is a better intake and heads like Joe mentioned. Thats it there is no reason to swap the entire motor in your car. They are a little different and not as strong as a 5.0HO I belive. If you buy it just put the intake and heads on but thats alot of money for just an intake and heads when you can get much better stuff than the GT-40 anyway. I say swap to mass air for the junk yard and then save the extra for a Trick Flow top end kit

well the motor has to come out anyway to replace the crank seals and oil pan gasket. they wont sell just the heads and intake so should i just scrap the idea?

If you're gonna spend $800 you might as well get a good set of heads and intake off eBay, something aftermarket.

i say keep you're money buy an real intake for $350-500 and an cam for $150-200 and you'll make 2X more pwr than that shit for less money..

or you could find a set of used aluminum heads for around $800..i can land a set of trick flow twisted wedge heads for $850 w/ 3-angle valve job and ported exhuast, intake and bowls...

save you're money!!!

why not...im still in high school and ran high 12s w/ my daily driver to school....and jordan has an 347 stroker as a somphmore or w/e..

and the block will break a lil over 500hp, the rotating assembly from 87-92 will last longer than that..
