1989 lx 5.0

Well I still don't know what all is done to this car, but I do know that it is highly modified. It has a problem, but people have told me different stories about what it could be. WHen I start the car it is fine, but gets hot within 5 minutes of driving it. The temp gets up to about 260-270. THe radiator looses antifreeze real fast, but I don't know where it is leaking at. The electric fan isn't coming on. I have never worked with electric fans, how do they hook up, maybe it isn't hooked up right. There is smoke coming from where the headers(long tubes) meet the block. Could this be a blown head gasket? I heard that if I had a blown head gasket, white smoke would just barrel out of the car and exhaust. But it has done that after stop at a light while hot. But as soon as I got home and stopped, there wasn't a lot of white smoke at all. Just wondering, should I find myself an aftermarket radiator because this car will be a drag car only after I do some more work. I have my 90 lx 5.0 for a daily driver. Also, This car will spin the tires through 3 gears, I guess because of the power, but would investing in some drag radials stop this problem, or do I need to learn how to drive better. When I raced some guy the other day, I gave it hell, spun through third gear, but I still won. I have came close to losing the car because of it not having power steering. Any help is welcome!!! Sorry so long. Thanks

sounds to me like it could be a blown headgasket with the white smoke and heating up as fast as it does. as far as the fans go, their obviously not getting power so i would get a multi meter and trace the wires to see where your getting power and where not. If your going to just drag the car, you might as well get an aftermarket aluminum radiator to keep it cool because heat will do you no good at the drag strip. as far as tires, once again if its going to be a drag car i would get a set of light rear wheels such as welds Draglites, and put a 26 or 28 tall ET Drag or ET streets by mickey thompson depending on rear gear ratio. spinning through third is probably normal, my mustang has a bone stock motor and will spin the street tires till 3rd like its job. but the first thing i would do is diagnose if it has a blown headgasket and figure out the fan situation

Electric fan has a temp sensor or bimetal contacts. When the contacts get hot, they touch ie "close the circuit" and the fan works.

Trace the wires going to the fan, do they have 12V when the key is turned?
If so then find the temp sensor, wired to the fans, and place a jumper, paper clip, piece of wire, etc, across the wires that go to the sensor. Does the fan work now?

I am thinking the water is boiling and going into the resevoir, and then on to the ground, or up in steam. You need to get the fan working or put back the tried and trust fan belt. I wouldn't drive the car if the fan is not operating. Hopefully you have not caused any damage, but I wouldn't drive it until you fix this problem

Yeah, thanks for the help, I'm not driving the car anymore until I fix the main issues. But I couldn't resist driving the car a few times because i just bought it. Hopefully, I didn't ruin or break anything else. Well, thanks guys!!!
