Street/Strip Project

ok so i have the oppertuinity to buy a 1991 foxbody with a 12 point cage and no motor or trans. i would like to build a 10 second car to run on the weekends at the local track. i was looking into getting a 351 from a junkyard and machining it to a 408, 418, or a 426. from what ive seen it requires 550 to 600 hp to run mid 10's. my question would be how much would it cost to do this with a bore'd and stroke'd junkyard 351. also how much would the transmission cost and what would it be.

i was looking around at cylinder heads and they seem to vary from 1k to 20k for a set. so i was wondering what kind of flow numbers would i be looking at to make 600 hp on a NA motor running 93 or 110 octane.

WOW 20k for heads???? Also stroking out a Ford factory 351w block will only hold up to about 700 hp before it splits like the 302. If you are going to want more power down the road I would intvest in a World or Dart block (9.500 beck height). Other then that the 351w will be fine.

look into a set of 225cc heads such as AFR or Trickllow and if you want to go the extra yard get em ported by total engine airflow.you could also get those heads already ported from TEA for a little cheaper

For 20K you could have a couple nice foxbodys runnin 11 second quarters or one "REALLY" nice fox under pressure...Those heads are CRAZY! You'd need one hell of an intake and exhaust

lol! so i was back to looking at the bore kits and they range from 306 to 427. and i was wondering if i had a rebuilt junkyard block bored to 427 would that be strong enough to run say a 100 shot of nos? prettymuch what im wondering is what would be the best balance be between strength and displacement?

The 408 is easiest for 99% of guys to build. When building a 427 with the 4.170 crank you need to watch the big end of the rod gets pretty high up in the cam tunnel and depending on cam, may need to clearance the big end of the rod. If none of what I said makes sense to you or you dont have the experience build a 408

OK you need to do some more homework before you just go buy a car! I did the same thing you are doing, I'm 17 now and I started building my engine 351w back in February.

Believe me when I tell you there are so many things that you haven't even considered into your cost factor!!! Engine work is expensive as hell, certain parts are too. If you have 2K after you buy the car that's enough to get started on the engine, go find one and plan out what your going to do to it, price out and buy all your internal parts then give it to the machine shop. While the engine is being built get to work on the car. Does it need paint or bodywork? Set the car up drags, springs, shocks, cross members, transmission, bell housing, tires and wheels.....ect

It's good that you want to do this like I did, but keep in mind a 10 second car is probably going to need nitrous or a supercharger or turbo, you could do it n/a but the engine would basically not be street friendly in the least.....

most of what you say is true, the last part is definately not. A 400 inch pump gas windsor is no problem on the street and will idle at 900rpm if you know what works. If this was 1990 I would agree with you but with the cylinder heads and cubic inches we have today, 10's N/A on a pump gas street car at 3000lbs is easy.
