Questions About T-5

Hey so my AOD in my 89 GT is dead. Metal shavings galore . but anyway, i am putting a 5 speed back in the car because someone changed it and put the AOD in it sometime during the life of the car. I have a few questions regarding the swap back. i have the clutch pedals and all that stuff, but i was wondering what else i need. I have the computer for the automatic, is that a problem or will that work? Will the bellhousing off of my AOD work with the T-5? and are the T-5's out of the 4 cyl mustangs the same as those in the 5.0? is there anything else i should be concerned about when doing this swap even though this was originally a 5 speed car? any recommendations?

Thanks for your help!

No, they aren't. The main difference are the gear ratios. The 4 cyl. cars were weak so the gear ratios are higher. Sorry, I have no answers for your other questions.

no the belhousing from your automatic wont work

and you also will need a clutch and a driveshaft to work with the T-5

Driveshaft should be the same unless you have one with the weird vibration dampener on it.

T-5s from 4-cylinder cars have a different input shaft and require a different pilot bearing. You can use them behind a V-8 but I wouldn't recommend using sticky tires or taking it to the track. The high first gear ratio makes the trans pretty weak.

The computer will work, but you will get better performance out of the manual computer (faster ignition advance ramps).

You will need a clutch fork and bellhousing and a cable. You might also want to make sure the clutch quadrant is still in one piece.
Don't forget, you will need a flywheel 157 tooth and a shifter.

ok cool! I'm trying to be kinda cost effective right now and i was wondering what type of T-5 i can get the most bang for my buck? I didn't realize there were soo many that would fit. I think the driveshaft is original and like i said it did have a 5 speed in it. I'm unsure if the flywheel was changed when the AOD was put in but i didn't think of that. how can i tell? and i think i'm gonna go with all new cables for the clutch linkage and all new clutch cylinders when i go through with this. Ill stay away from the t-5's out of 4 bangers. i'm looking to make some power with this car one day.

The clutch is cable operated there are no hyd cylinders or anything like that. The other end of the cable hooks up directly to the clutch fork...

You definitely have a flexplate with an automatic, so you will need a flywheel for the manual. They cost about $100 new. I have seen some overseas (read china) billet ones for Under $200. Not sure on the quality of those.
