Harmonic Balancer

What exactly determines the choice and weight? Just looking to purchase one for a 306 engine build.

What is wrong with your stock balancer? If it is bad and you need a replacement you will need to match the imbalance. 83-95 5 liter H.0. engines are 50 oz. Earlier 5 liters (302) are 28 oz.

I don't know it it was a H.O. engine, I just know that the block came is a roller cam block out of a 87 GT. Since it was a 87 just go with the 50 oz since it was a roller cam block possibly meaning that it was a H.O.?

It depends on the rotating assembly you are going to run. Namely the crank. The crank throws on the crank shaft are different between the 28.2 OZ balanced engine and the 50 Oz balanced engine, the throw are smaller on the newer 50 Oz counter weighted crank. As was said before though, upgrading your balancer isn't really necessary if you are just building a moderate 6,000 rpm street engine. Save the money you would normally spend on a sweet balancer and go have a machine shop balance the rotating assembly instead.

Using a new stock crank. Just looking to buy a new one, I just want the engine completly done so all I have to do is take the factory one out whole and set in the new one in. I plan on taking the block and have it bored thirty over and taking the new crank, new DSS pistons, factory connecting rods to the machine shop and have them balance the assembly, I guess that is what they call it. Will they tell me which one to purchase or will they need one before they can balance? Thanks for all your help and suggestions.

I guess it depends on what you you are using for a rotating assembly, if when you say new crank you mean you are buying a pretty good crank that is capable of 5-600 hp, then by all means save up the few extra hundred dollars and buy a good balancer, this way if you decide to step it up later and add more power you will not need to have the rotating assembly rebalanced and you will not have to toss the new stock balancer and buy a good aftermarket replacement. I always used to run the ford motorsport billet steel one. I like how it looked and it was fully indexed for timing the engine.

Is it the original engine? If so, it a high output.

You'll need the balancer you are going to use and the flywheel you are going to use if you want a spot on rotational balance. Otherwise you can get it balanced with whatever balancer and flywheel they have laying around in the shop and then when you put yours on, it will not be perfect, but close enough for a street engine.
