Go with the 460. You can make double the horsepower for half the money of building a 5 liter. You have to keep in mind that you will need a transmission, motor mounts, headers, oil pan, manual master cylinder and a few other odds and ends but it is not a hard swap. The 460 is quite a bit heavier but the horsepower difference more than makes up for it.

yep 460...with cam, heads, intake, good carb and good fuel delivery and ignition you can make serious numbers...just harder to find parts for, heavier...but for the price to run 11s...its worth it...only dont plan on stroking an 73/74 or newer 460...they arent truely made to handle a hole hell of a lot of HP...

Ummm, what? Ive seen super stockers with mid 70s 460 blocks making 800+hp, and last season after season after season... I would say 800hp is more than alot.

maybe early 70s...like 70-72...but anything after that rlly isnt all that great...yeah they can still handle 600+ easy...but not as much as the stronger big blocks and even small blocks of the 68-72ish era...

the motor, trans, and rearend are sitting in the backyard still installed in a 76 thunderbird. i gotta get the oil pan, mounts, and headers, and my car came with manual brakes when i bought it. its a stock 460 so what kind of numbers can i expect out of it? my car is fully gutted and on drag radials with a 3.42 or somewhere around there with a spool.

yes i've built some, worked on some and have friends of my dads that run them...they were made different in the late 60's and very early 70s..not being that different the mid 70s and newer arent as strong..and you will know with any 351w is nothing after 71 or so..

actually one of the 68-72 is pushing mid 700s..the other is only doing 550 or so...

and the mid to late 70's ones only made it to low 500's before they blew..

and wicked surprisingly the one out of an 89 f250 is pushing very high 500s and seams stronger than ever the more they add to it...

yeah my number limits maybe off..but from my expirence and what i've seen and be told..any block from mid 70's and on had lower nickel content and smaller cylinder walls

The heads are old antique CJ's from ford the block is mid 80's, 6 years later still in the same mud truck of the new owner. Anyone who tells you 500 on ANY big ford block is purely talking out of there ass. We run the bone stock cast crank to well over 1000hp. There was NEVER a forged crank for a big ford, ever until recently. Nickel this, nickel that, more horseshit.

Interesting. My 76 460 block in my 72 Gran Torino FB(im almost positive that was the year of the block) never gave way, and it was pushing in excess of 750hp. I raced it season, after season... for 3 years, and jammed out 10.30s with it.. never gave me problems. Ive also worked with alot of different mid 70s, and early 70s BB Fords, with my brothers cars and projects. Never had ANY fail, with the proper machine work.

i never said its dead at 500hp...i've seen that happen..i didnt say thats the limit..if i did i didnt mean to...but i bet you have built 1000hp big blocks..im just saying from what i seen, built and read the mid and late 70's, and 80s were all that great...how is nickel content bullshit..its more HP...and like i said that block is 80...our 89 f250 460 is pushing great at 600hp...so idk

these motors were all built through my father and all his buddy who've been doing this 25+ yrs mininal each....and machine work done by mid-cape machine..that anyone that knows them will tell you they do great work...thats why i doubt its the build..its the block...

You just said in an early post, that you had a hand building them? Now its, your father has done the work? Im a little confused. Ive raced BB Fords... not for 20 or 30 years, only about 4.. and maybe an extra year in there of experimenting with building them. Ive spent 100s... literally 100s of hours at the track with numerous cars, and setups.. between mustangs, a falcon.. and my torino.. ive never seen, or heard of.. or even broke ANY BB Ford block. I havent been doing this shyt for years... like some, but for the few years ive been doing it.. this is what i know, based on what ive done. Not what people tell me, or certainly not only based on what i see.
