Auburn Pro vs Detroit Locker vs ?another guy with a mud pulling truck had exploded the case..it cracked where the pinion shaft went in. i only saw this AFTER forking out $$$ to buy one. its in the car now, but never been run yet. i would think slicks on a drag car would be more stressful than mud, right? |

Good heavy duty differentials don't use clutches. Most of the stuff out there uses cones or ratchets.
Auburn and Eaton make good stuff for street/stip cars.

if the stangs come with a posi is there really a need for a locker...how much would it help you....or is it one of those things that helps at 500+hp

Yes. The factory clutch type traction lock is not a heavy duty piece. If you do a lot of drag racing an aftermarket piece can save some headaches. On the plus side the factory piece is easily rebuilt and there are some tricks to make it work a little better.

The factory piece will hold quite a bit of power with the carbon disk upgrade (the are used in the 03-04 cobras, so...) and packing it with four disks instead of three. They will handle quite a bit of power, but plan on rebuilding them every few years if you spend a lot of time at the track. It's not really a big deal, if you don't mind setting your vavle lash twice a year, you shouldn't mind rebuilding your track-lok every year or so.

Besides, how do you upgrade your factory traction lock to accept a good axle?

well. i feel a bit better now, an auburn or a detroit locker, pretty close in $$, so i was just second guessing if i made the wrong choice, but the 31 spline axles is exactly the reason i upgraded the posi, anyhow. never had a detoit locker before.
thanks for the info. |

Go with a locker.... Auburns are junk I already broke my auburn. I got a one wheel wonder when doing a burnout at the track and am going with a detroit locker. I run Street ET's at all times so my Posi did take alot of abuse.

I plan on using an Eaton. It already has the carbon-fiber clutches.

I had an aburn pro for a couple of years and didn't like it from the day it was installed. It popped and chattered with 2 bottles of friction mod and car would not kick sideways it would slip.I now have a FR trac lock and have no complaints.

I don't know how you figure some of the shit you say, but the factory track lok out of an 03/04 cobra is made for 31 spline axles, cost $200 and is made to hold 400+ hp before you upgrade to 4 clutches per side. It takes me about 1 hour to rebuild my trak-loc. Drop the cover, take out the pin, knock the clips out, pull the axles 2 inches, knock the spring out, put new clutches in, measure clutch pack and grab the correct shim, put them back in, followed by the spring, clips, and pin. Put cover on and fill the diff. I guess if it is your first time or only have one arm it might take 4 hours... My current diff hasn't needed a rebuild in two years...

By the way, if you are pulling out a trac lok to rebuild it, that is just retarded they are cake to rebuild while still in the rear.
