5.0 Base Idle Reset
Base Idle Reset Procedure
1. Clean TB with carb cleaner and nylon brush (toothbrush size). Engine off, fully open TB blade and spray/brush TB until all gunk and oil residue is cleaned. 2. Allow to dry, or close TB blade and start engine until it clears all carb cleaner fumes/liquid. 3. Let engine idle...if it doesn't, increase idle speed via TB stop screw until engine stays idling on its own. 4. Disconnect IAC valve, if engine dies repeat 3 with IAC disconnected. 5. Set idle speed to the lowest setting possible between 650-850 rpms with IAC disconnected. It is key to use the lowest possible to prevent idle surge, rolling, etc once the IAC is connected as follows. 6. Turn engine off, and reconnect IAC 7. With Ign On Eng Off, check TPS voltage output....if it's between .8vdc - 1.0vdc, it's OK. This voltage check should be done between the Green and Black wires at the TPS side connector as shown in the pic below (FYI: Green = TPS Signal, Black = SIGRTN, and Orange = VREF)....(-) terminal of the DVOM on the Black wire and (+) terminal on the Green wire. 8. Disconnect battery (-) for 3-4 minutes. 9. Reconnect battery, start engine, allow it to idle for 2-4 minutes to confirm setup, 10. If idle speed falls too low or stalls, increase idle speed via the TB set screw a little at a time. 11. Turn engine off for 20 seconds, re-start engine and repeat 9 - 11 if required. 12. Reconfirm TPS output is within the .8vdc - 1.0vdc range optimum range. NOTES: 1. No need to reset ECM KAM (reset computer), the TPS minimum value used for idle control, is reset automatically by the EEC-IV every time the ign is cycled on-off for 20 seconds-on. 2. If the TPS output is within 6vdc - 1.1vdc, it's still acceptable, since no TPS failure codes will be generated, and it falls within the EEC-IV .5vdc - 1.19vdc working range. 13. Allow a 10-20 minute "relearning" period under normal driving conditions (drive cycle).....you're done! As original from Joel5.0 of index Last edited by TurboLX : December 14th, 2007 at 10:16 AM. |

If all that still doesen't help try adding Ford part number F2PZ-9F939-A. This is a factory ford "Engine Idle Air Kit" That gives you additional adjustment range in your Idle speed without changing throttle angle.

I know that this post has probably been here a while but I would still like to say that it is extremely useful and I appreciate it being here for reference. Also I would like to add on 94-95 models the TB screw isn't a screw but a stud. I suggest to avoid hurting the threads on it with a set of pliers or something else trying to adjust it, but instead grab a hack saw and gut a small groove in the top [deep enough not to strip] and use a flat-head screwdriver like you normally would on it. Worked like a charm for me, it may take some penetrating oil if the stud/screw is seized up. Just though I would put my 2˘ in

could this be part of the problem i am having, the car idles fine until i turn the air or defrost on, then it drops idle and bounces up and down, occ stalling. happens even sometimes when driving and if push clutch in, can die. If air off, runs great. Not sure what is causing it. The volts also drop with idle.

need a F2PZ-9F939-A TABP?
If you have followed all of the hints above, used the idle adjustment procedure in the tech section and have determined that you still need the Throttle Air Bypass Plate (TABP air adjust spacer plate) you can get one directly from TOMCO for $22.91 plus shipping. I think that mine came to ~$30 delivered by the guy in the brown truck. It is their part number 8491. I had one on my '88 that was the Ford part and have this one on my
'90 and they are the same part only Tomco's is a lot less expensive. For you lucky stroker 347 guys and those who have a 351 or bigger, be sure and read the "idiot sheet" that comes with the plate, it is very thorough and easy to understand but you need to pay special attention to the modification for bigger displacement engines. I linked to their .jpg file of the part if you want to look at it and see just what everybody is talking about. Happy idling. [url="http://www.tomco-inc.com/admin/ProductImages/8491.jpg"[/URL]
