Engine Swap Questions

a friend wants to find an early 80's stang with a blown engine and install a 460 big block and a manual tranny, possibly a T5....

the 460 will remain stock except for a manifold and holley carb, and a mallory ignition, headers, flowmaster exhaust, etc.....how easy is this conversion??

would that big block drop in or are there special engine mounts and adapters that have to be installed, and if so, is there a company that specializes in these "kits"??

also, would a T5 be able to handle the 460? it's only good for 400HP, so should he go with a beeifer tranny, or would the T5 handle the added torque and HP??

i suspect that when he finishes the engine it will have about 450 HP with some modifications..it should be a scary ride when he finishes for a small price tag!!

any information appreciated, and hopefully someone here has already done this...

first off a t-5 will be torn to shreads by all that power. you would have to look into aftermarket transmissions.

i think the swap is pretty easy....its been talked about her a few times before.

You con buy a swap kit wich gives you motor mounts and the headers neccasary for the swap I belive. And you will need an after market trans the T-5 wont hold together behind a built 460

But why a 460 you can easily build a more than powerfull 351W to put in there without as much hassle

id use a C6 behind a 460 even though it would sap a little more power its much more durable than a C4.As for a manual you would need either a G force T-5,TKO 500,TKO 600, or a T56

A C4 won't hold up very long on the street behind a 460. A C6 is a boat anchor. Find a Powerglide or Turbo 400 to use.

very true, but consider thats probably an truck 460..and those from the 80s were rated at highest of 275hp...with carb and intake...290...WHOA..geeze...C6 are rocks, there made to last, but not to last behind pwr..find an old 4spd out of an late 60s mustang that was behind an big block...
