MSD Distributor

I am installing a MSD distributor and for the life of my i can't get it in there. Any suggestions on what might be the problem. The oil pump rod that sticks into the bottom of the distributor keeps falling to the side i think that might be the problem, so i used a little greese to keep it from falling over and it still wont go in. Ive compared it to the distributor i pulled out and there identical, as far as length and gear. Any help would be awesome. Thanks

You might have to turn the motor over to get the shaft to line up with the bottom of the distributor. Once the shaft lines up and the distributor drops down make sure you can push it down all the way by hand so that the base of the distributor contacts the block. If there is an 1/8" gap, pull the distributor back out and you will have to fabricate a way to push the retaining ring on the oil pump shaft down further on the shaft. I've yet to see an MSD distributor drop in a 5 liter without pushing the retaining ring down but its been a couple years since I've bought an EFI distributor so MSD may have corrected there machining error by now. The shaft on the MSD EFI distributors is about an 1/8" longer than the stock distributor.....they used to be longer anyway. Like I said, they might have fixed the problem by now.

The oil pump rod shouldn't be falling to the side, it should fit snugly in the oil pump. you sure you got the right rod?
