Smog & A/C Delete

Ok, let me start by saying this thread is going out for all of the people that ask about eliminater pulleys for smog and a/c. You can do that but if you're on a budget and need to save as much $ as possible, this may be a solution to your problem.

I am not sure if there has been a thorough run through on how to do this but i will try and make it short and to the point...

As you can see there are 4 diagrams, but i know most people that want to get rid of smog also want to get rid of a/c too. So, it would do you no good to get rid of power steering and smog just to keep a/c.

The last diagram will be how the belt will end up being ran, you will need to take a tape measure to get a good judgement on the length of belt you need.

Ok, so you will unbolt the tensioner pulley from the alternater bracket by loosening the bolt on the rear side of the tensioner with a wrench or impack if need be.

You will have a tab on the back of the tensioner like on the farthest pictured.
You will need to grind that off completly to get a flat surface like tensioner #2.

Here is an example of a finished product. The tab was ground off so that you could pull the tensioner tight to get a hold on the shorter belt. Proceed to tighten the bolt on the rear of the tensioner back into place.

I decided to grind some of the tensioner housing away so i would have no problems of clearance. You could also run a little longer belt than what i have ran. (my setup has an underdrive crank pulley so i can not be certain my size belt will fit all setups)

If you decide to grind some of the tensioner housing away make sure to remember the bolt on the front of the pulley is reverse threaded. Righty Loosey, Lefty Tighty.

-Well this concludes removal of the smog & a/c pulley to run a smaller belt. I hope i covered all the details and could help. If somebody would like to chime in on the actual removal of the smog pump and pump lines that would be appreciated.

well this was in my case but the 84.5" belt was way to big. the 78" belt i got worked perfect for the a/c and crank and water pump and alternator and power steering. just

I found that diagram on google. i would recommend just to measure what you need instead of going off somebody elses thought. im not sure if they are correct but it was good way for me to show a diagram of how to run the belt for a/c and smog removal.

Great little write up you gave here, I'm sure it will give lots of great ideas to people. I'll toss in a little more extreme routing too. Recently I found my self in need of running only an Alt and water pump, but did not want to buy a new opposite rotation water pump for my car, so I relocated my tensioner on a piece of plate aluminum, with a 45.5" belt... and well here it is... the way the tensioner is positioned, it actually tightens the belt under acceleration......purposely

Id worry about the belt sliding since there are no "sidewalls" i guess is what they're called on the pulley. but if it works i guess it works.

2 things I can add. You can see in this picture how you could also run it without the Power steering, just the water pump and alt. You do need a standard size crank pulley however to get enough belt on the water pump if you don't run a PS pump.

the second thing is, you can get a tensioner that goes the opposite direction of the stock one so that it pulls the belt ups. I would give you the part number, but my cars in storage for the winter.

Nice work!

March sells the same thing for $50, however they recommend a slightly different belt routing.
