Vibrations!

Put a new clutch in last week end. Got many vibrations after I put it back together. At first it was noticable rom around 45 mph and up. SO, I raised the car, checked everythig, took the driveshaft off and re torqued it. Now the vibrations start at about 70 mph. Heavy on the gas, the worse the vibes get. If I put in the clutch, the vibes go away. I had the flywheel machined, I checked the motor mounts, tranny mounts, cross member mounts, tranny to bell mounts, bell to engine mounts, and I still have vibes. I saw A weight on the shaft, but people said there could be more than one. So, today, I'm going to look for dents in the shaft, look for missing weights, and check the yolk and u-joints. What else can there be to look for. HELP!

you have practically done everything i would guess

its definatley in the driveline cause it goes away when you push in the clutch, so ya check the driveshaft and go from there

thats a tricky one

Didn't touch the diff. I have had the tranny out three times in the last 4 weeks. This is the first time I got vibes. But the only difference between then and now is I put in the clutch. Why the hell is it typing like this?! Anyways, like I said, I put a new clutch in. Ok, here's the up date. I'm in the shop right now and I just checked for missing weights and dents in the driveshaft. Nothing. The shaft is perfet. No missing weights, yolkes and u-joints no play whatso ever and no dents in the shaft either. What else to look for?

one time at my work i slapped a bunch of stamp weights on my bosses drive shaft on his truck, it caused the same problem, but you said so yourself that no weights are missing.

how did your pressure plate look?

The old King Cobra pressure plate, or the new McLeod pressure plate?

It looked like a pressure plate. Not sure what else to say about it... You want a pic?

Well, I had the flywheel resurfaced. A mechanic buddy of mine said that if the pressure plate was a little warped, machining it could have put it out of balance. You could see that the old clutch and pressure plate had uneven wear and some hot spots on the old pressure plate. But, the flywheel looked good. I didn't know that machining a flywheel could put it out of balance. And also thought it fi t was the flywheel or clutch assembly, then wouldn't it vibrate in neutral (car not moving) also...?

One thing you can try is unbolting the driveshaft, turn it 180 degrees and bolt it back up. I think your problem is elsewhere though. Did you replace the pressure plate, disc and throw out bearing? It sounds like the pressure plate is fucked up because the problem goes away when you push the clutch in. Other possibilities are flywheel bolts not tight, pressure plate bolts not tight, pressure plate dowels not reinstalled after surfacing and transmission and bellhousing bolts not being tight.

Yeah, someone else mentioned turning the shaft 180. And yes, I replaced, ALL NEW, pressure plate, disc, t/b, and fork. I also torqued averything down to spec based on a Haynes manual. That's what everyone else said to do. Abou the dowels, the machine shop installed them in the wrong holes. So, I had to remove them and install them in their correct location.

So, you recommend taking the tranny out again and double checking torque on all the flywheel bolts, bell housing bolts, and pressure plate bolts?

At that point would it be a good dea to have the flywheel balanced, or does it not get out of balance...?

You could check it. I'd look at that pressure plate and disc too and make sure nothing is out of whack there. Maybe have your mechanic buddy look at it.

I'll try turning the d/s first. That is the most simple thing to do and there is always that chance that it went it 180 the wrong way to begin with... If that does not work, I'm stripping the driveline...
