ok let me rephrase this...cause this is really getting aggravating...i just hooked up a new alternator that my friend gave me off one of his other motors he has and after i hooked everything up it looked good at first but then the voltage on the battery jumped all the way up into the red and the amp light is coming on now anyone with any idea?

If your AMP light is on, it means it's not charging enough.

I just went through this with my car not too long ago, I ordered a small alt. pulley and it's been fine ever since.

Good luck figuring it out.

Take it to Autozone or Advanced and have them test it, sounds like the diode trio is burnt out

I think you are having problems with your wiring, and no you cannot overrev an alternator or cause it to overcharge unless the alternator itself is broken.

diode trio does not equal regulator.

see TMoss diagram

Whoops what was I thinking any for info:
OUTPUT DIODES
A/C voltage is of little use in a D/C system, such as used in an automobile, so it has to be converted to D/C before it can be used. This conversion to D/C takes place in the "output diodes" and in the "diode trio." Diodes have the property of allowing current to flow in only one direction, while blocking current flow in the other direction. The output diodes consist of six diodes, one pair for each winding. One of the pair is for the negative half cycle, and the other for the positive half cycle.
