Setting Distributor and Timing on a 93 5.0 that is carbed.
I have a 93 5.0 engine I have converted to carb and Mallory distributor with mechanical advance.
Accidentally rolled over engine with out distributor in and now at a loss to figure out how to position this so it will fire right. It doesn't seem to have the standard timing marks on the balancer, just one large groove cut into it, and a metal bracket on the block marked TIME. If I get these lined up is this Cylinder 1's TDC on EFI engines? How do you check the advance if there aren't any degrees marked? Thanks for any help. |

easy, find # 1 cyl should be PS front, take the plug out. put a small long wire in there (or something) turn car over by hand(socket on crank shaft,or someehere ) and turn it over slow intill the wire is pushed out as high as it want to go. this will be top dead center. now find the plug wire trace it back to cap when you set in the Dist back into motor the rotor should be pointed at this plug wire on the cap.

Thanks for the advice, but does the timing mark (groove) on the balancer also mean TDC for this cylinder also?

Put your finger over the spark plug hole and cheak for compression stroke. Or pull valve cover off and watch the intake and exhuast valves to cheak for compression stroke. #1 cylinder is front passenger side.

the motor will only blow out on the compression stroke, because during exhuast, the port will be opened, so hold ur finger over the hole until u feel it blow, the stick something that wont break off in ur cylinder or damage anything and get the piston to TDC as high as it will go... and wherever the rotor inside your cap is pointing, that it where your number 1 wire should be and check your firing order and install wires accordingly

and yes, the mark on the balancer should be topside towards the passenger side a little when the piston is at TDC

Clean the balancer up. There are timing marks on it.

Just cleaned the balancer and discovered the markings, just covered by surface rust. The big groove is 180 degrees away from these, totally sent me on a wild goose chase.
Thanks for all your help, hopefully will have it fired up in a few weeks. |
